At NewtonOne, we understand that accurate and up-to-date metadata is key to effective media monitoring and analysis. The metadata and metrics we gather from various traditional and social media sources provide deep insights into the content you're tracking. These data points not only inform basic characteristics of each article but also play a crucial role in visualizing trends and patterns through analytical outputs in dashboards.
Our database is regularly updated to ensure relevance and accuracy. Metadata is collected and refreshed at regular intervals for different types of media content. Data sources vary by media type, spanning both traditional and social media. The primary provider for the data package is the MDS database by Omnicom Media Group. For sources not included in this package, metadata is estimated by our analysts using publicly available tools like SimilarWeb and NetMonitor.
Readership (Reach)
The percentage of the target audience aged 12–79 that has read a specific print title. It answers the question of how many people have read a particular issue of a newspaper or magazine. This value represents the reach of the given print source and is based on the Mediaprojekt survey.
Since readership reflects the number of people who have read a title (not those who purchased it), the number of readers is always higher than the number of copies sold. The survey accounts for situations where, for example, a father brings home a newspaper—one purchased copy—but multiple household members read it. As a result, the readership of a print title can be up to three times higher than its circulation.
Print Circulation
The total number of printed copies for a single issue of a publication. The number of printed copies reflects the publisher's intent to target specific audiences. Print circulation is always higher than the number of copies sold.
For example, tabloid publications typically have high print circulation (referred to as high-circulation titles) because they aim to reach a broad spectrum of the population. In contrast, more specialized publications tend to have lower print circulation (low-circulation titles) as they are designed for specific groups of readers, such as banking executives or aviation enthusiasts.
Sold Circulation
The total number of copies sold for a single issue of a print publication. This includes copies sold through retail, subscriptions, and discounted sales. The figure corresponds to the publication frequency of the title (e.g., daily for newspapers, weekly for magazines, monthly for monthly publications). It is one of the key indicators of the market position of print media.
Web
The calculation algorithm accounts for user activity across all measured servers, initially addressing situations where one individual might be represented by multiple cookies (e.g., using multiple devices, clearing cookies, etc.) or, conversely, where one cookie (unique user) might represent multiple individuals (e.g., a shared household computer used by several members).
The result is the number of cookies (or BID identifiers) that would have been recorded if no cookies were deleted during the measured month, calculated for the entire internet and for each server/section individually.
In the next step, Reach is calculated for each server/section based on the estimated cookies, and this is then applied to the size of the internet population, which is determined for the given month through external offline research.
RU/Day = Real users per day (Reach)
This metric represents the number of unique users visiting a website in a single day. Each unique user is counted only once, even if the visitor accesses the same website multiple times during the day.
RU/Month = Real users per month
This metric represents the number of unique users visiting a website within a month. Each unique user is counted only once, even if the visitor accesses the website multiple times during the month or on a daily basis.
Total traffic
This metric represents the total traffic to a website over the course of a month. It measures the number of visits to a specific address, performed by visitors from a particular target group within a specified time period.
A visit is defined as a series of page views generated by a visitor on the selected website (domain) where no more than 30 minutes elapse between two consecutive page views.
Television
Viewership (Reach)
Viewership varies throughout the day, with certain time slots attracting higher audiences than others. This fluctuation is reflected in the program's viewership data, which is sourced from the MDS database.
Radio
Listenership (Reach)
Listenership fluctuates throughout the day, with certain time slots attracting more listeners than others. This variation is reflected in the listenership data for programs, which is sourced from the MDS database.
Social media
Impressions (Reach)
Listenership fluctuates throughout the day, with certain time slots attracting more listeners than others. This variation is reflected in the listenership data for programs, which is sourced from the MDS database.
Vypočítané ukazatele (Indexy / Metriky)
REACH= OTS = Opportunity To See
Typ média: Klasická média
Výpočet: Čtenost + RU/den + Sledovanost + Poslechovost
Overall Visibility
This parameter is used to calculate the overall visibility of content, primarily for international media.
Media Type: Traditional Media
Calculation: Print Circulation + Total Web Traffic + Viewership + Listenership
GRP = Gross Rating Point = Media Impact
This metric is used to describe the reach of a campaign in a broad target audience—specifically the population aged 15 and older. The "15+" audience is considered equivalent to the consumer population in the Czech Republic, making it a universal and broad target group. One GRP corresponds to reaching 1% of the "15+" target audience.
Media Type: Traditional Media
Calculation: OTS (Readership + RU/Day + Viewership + Listenership) / 90000
AVE = Advertising Value Equivalency
The calculation of AVE determines the cost of a published article if it were placed as an advertisement in the same media outlet. AVE is based on the current advertising rates of the specific media outlet. In the NewtonOne application, a "Simple AVE" is available, which considers the area of the article or the length of the program transcript in NewtonOne and the advertising rate of the media outlet.
Media Type: Traditional Media
Note: Weighted AVE is calculated by analysts in our media analyses. Compared to simple AVE, it additionally considers factors such as the placement of the article within the publication, its tone, the scope of the information, the presence of images, and whether key information appears in the headline. Each parameter is assigned a coefficient that contributes to the financial valuation of media activities. The result is the article's value translated into the cost of advertising space.
REACH
A summary metric for both traditional and social media.
Media Type: Traditional and Social Media
Calculation: OTS + Impressions
This is the aggregate reach across all media types (Print - Readership, Web - RU/Day, TV - Viewership, Radio - Listenership, Social Media - Impressions).
