Service User Number (SUN)

Locate and understand your Service User Number (SUN).

Written by Gemma Langley

A Service User Number (SUN) forms part of the Direct Debit scheme and is used to help identify the organisation collecting payments. It ensures Direct Debit transactions can be correctly attributed and provides transparency for both businesses and customers when payments are taken.

What is a SUN?

A SUN is a unique six‑digit number assigned to organisations that collect payments by Direct Debit. It is used by banks and payment processors to identify who is requesting the payment and to support the tracking and reconciliation of Direct Debit transactions.

Where will the SUN appear?

The SUN may appear in different places depending on how Direct Debits are set up and managed:

  • Mandate forms – If you use paper mandates to sign up new customers, the mandate form will display your SUN alongside the associated bank account details. This helps confirm the authority under which payments will be collected.

  • Customer bank statements (your own SUN) – If your organisation has its own SUN, it usually appears on the customer’s bank statement alongside your company name, allowing customers to recognise the origin of the payment.

  • Customer bank statements (our SUN) – If you use our SUN, Access PaySuite may appear on the customer’s bank statement instead, acting as the collecting entity on your behalf.

If you require any assistance, please reach out to our support team and request to speak to an agent.

Paperless SUN

If you have a SUN which is paperless, it means you can sign up new customers to Direct Debit without the need for the customer to sign a paper mandate. This could be over the telephone or on an online web page.

If you own your SUN, you'll need to contact your sponsoring bank to confirm if your SUN is paperless.

If Access PaySuite have provided you with a SUN, please reach out to our support team and request to speak to an agent.
