Filters help you get the dataset you're looking for. On the Nugit Platform, they can be applied at different levels, and the hierarchy goes as follows:

  • Segment filters are applied first, if you are using Segments to create your story. These filters will apply to all of the data sources included in your segment.

  • Global Filters (also known as Story or Report-level filters) come next. They apply to the entire story.

  • Nugit Filters apply to a single nugit (visualisation) only and are applied last. They can be used as an additional layer on top of the global filters, or bypass them (to show a different set of data) if needed.

Note: filters can be made available in Live-view mode, so the viewer can add & remove Global & nugit-level filters. In this case, changes made are not saved, and if the user closes the window and re-opens the story, the original filters will be restored.

How do filters work?

Regardless of the level, filters contain a dimension & criteria: Contains, Does not Contain, Matches, or Does not Match + the selected value(s).

You can add more than one filter using AND or OR.

  • Using AND means that you'll filter and return only the data that matches both conditions simultaneously

  • Using OR means that you'll filter and return only the data that matches one condition or the other.

Step-by-Step: Add a filter

We will now go through the 3 different ways to filter your data, using segment, story & nugit-level filters.

I. Add a filter to a Segment

  1. From the Homepage, click on the burger icon on the top left side, and click on 'Segments'.

  2. Either create a new segment or click on the 'Edit' button of an existing segment.

  3. In the segment settings, find the 'Filter' section.

  4. To add a new filter, click on "Select Option" and select the Dimension you'd like to filter by (Campaign, Device, Channel, etc)

  5. Define your conditions, by clicking on Contains, Does not Contain, Matches, or Does not Match and select or type the relevant values in the next field.

  6. Click on 'Save' or 'Update'.

The newly added filter will apply on all reports using this segment.

II. Add a filter to a Story

  1. In the top menu bar, click on the 'Filter' button.

Note : If Segment filters are already applied to the data sources in use, a red dot will appear on the Filter button. The next pop-up window will display  "The Segment used in this story is filtered", and you'll be able to show the filters in place by clicking on 'Show'.

2. To add a new filter, click on "Select Option" and select the Dimension you'd like to filter by (Campaign, Device, Channel, etc)

3. Define your conditions, by clicking on Contains, Does not Contain, Matches, or Does not Match and select or type the relevant values in the next field.

4. You can add more filters using the '+' Button on the right. You can then select "AND" or "OR".
5. Click on 'Save' to apply your filter(s).

III. Add a filter to a specific nugit

  1. Click on the Filter icon in the menu bar of the visualisation (nugit) you'd like to filter.

  2. Use the same process to add a new filter.

  3. By default, the nugit filters will be applied on top of the global filters.
You can bypass the global filters by ticking the box in the bottom left corner. In this case, global filters will not apply to this nugit anymore, and only the nugit-level filters will be used.

  4. Click on 'Save'

III(a). Add a metric filter to table nugits

  1. Click on the Filter icon in the menu bar of the table nugit you'd like to filter.

  2. Under By Metrics section, select the Metric you'd like to filter by (Media Spend, Clicks, Impression, etc)

  3. Define your conditions from the list of criteria ("Greater than", "Lesser than or Equals to", "Equals to", etc.) and type the relevant values in the next field.

  4. You can add more filters using the '+' Button on the right. You can then select "AND" or "OR".

  5. Click on 'Save' to apply your filter(s).

Note: By default, all tables will have this default filter applied to filter out empty rows:

Knowing the dimensions that are applicable to certain types of datasources is important when creating filters for stories that contain multiple types of data sources, especially if you are looking at filtering across various datasource platforms.

While most dimensions like "Datasource Platform", "Campaigns" are applicable across platforms, some dimensions like "Ad Group" are specific to a datasource (i.e. Google Ads). You can still use platform-specific filters and combine it with other conditions by using the OR function.
