When you set a theme all the text, visualisations and background colours will appear in the colours of that theme. This helps to make sure your data stories are always on brand and look consistently impressive.
Step by step: How to create a theme
From the home page click the drop down burger menu in the top left corner and select ‘Themes’.
Click on ‘Create your own’ in the custom themes section and give it a name.
Click on each swatch in turn and use the dropper to select the colours you want to use in your theme. Alternatively, you can input HEX values to select specific colours if you’re following a brand guideline.
Notice the preview on the right of the screen will update to show how your colours look together.
Once you’re happy with your selections remember to click 'Save'.
How to edit an existing theme
To edit an existing theme, follow the same steps as above but instead of selecting ‘Create your own’ theme hover over the existing theme that you’d like to change and click ‘Edit’.
If you make changes to a theme this will affect all other data stories with that theme.
Step by step: How to apply a theme to your story
From within the edit mode in your data story click the ‘Settings’ cog icon at the top.
Scroll through the theme thumbnails and select the one you want to apply. (You can hover over any thumbnail and click 'Preview' to get a closer look.)
Once you’ve selected a theme, scroll to the bottom of the page and click ‘Save’.
Check how your data story looks with the new theme. If any of the title text is hard to read, hover over it and click the ‘Paintbrush’ icon in the slim menu that appears. This allows you to select which of your theme colours is used for that particular text block.
If text is hard to read or you’re unhappy with the placement of colours in your data story, follow instructions for ‘Editing an existing theme’ and adjust the order of the colours there.
TOP TIPS
The first 3 colours of a theme are the most prominent in your data story so make sure any key brand colours are used for these. The rest of the colours will only appear on some visualisations that use multiple colours eg a bar chart with many bars.
Make sure you pick colours for text that will be legible and compliment brand colours.
