Using Numeral’s Tax Engine with NetSuite (SuiteTax)

This article walks you through how to connect NetSuite SuiteTax to Numeral’s Tax Engine, from pre‑checks to testing your first invoice.

Numeral integrates directly with NetSuite SuiteTax to calculate and apply accurate sales tax on your NetSuite transactions. The integration is no‑code and designed to work out of the box once connected and configured.

⚠️ Important: Numeral only supports NetSuite SuiteTax. We do not currently integrate with NetSuite’s Legacy Tax engine.

Before You Begin

Before starting setup, you’ll need to verify which NetSuite tax engine your account is using. If you’re unsure, NetSuite Support or your NetSuite account representative can help confirm this.

SuiteTax → ✅ Supported

Legacy Tax → ❌ Not supported

⚠️ Important: Once you migrate from Legacy Tax to SuiteTax, you cannot switch back. Moving to SuiteTax may impact existing NetSuite configurations, so we strongly recommend coordinating with NetSuite before making this change.

Note: NetSuite has announced plans to sunset Legacy Tax, so all customers will eventually be required to use SuiteTax.

Setup Instructions

The Numeral ↔ NetSuite integration requires only a few configuration steps.

Step 1: Add NetSuite as a Connection in Numeral

  1. Log in to your Numeral dashboard.

  2. Navigate to Connections.

  3. Click Add Connection and select NetSuite.

Once connected, Numeral will begin syncing data.

Step 2: Product Categories Sync

After the connection is established, your NetSuite product categories will automatically sync into Numeral. This process may take a few hours.

You’ll manage product categorization in Numeral the same way you do for other platforms like Stripe or QuickBooks Online. During onboarding, your Onboarding Manager will help you set up your initial product categories in Numeral and show you how to manage them going forward. Numeral’s tax engine uses these categories to determine the correct taxability for each product.

💡 Before You Start: Have a copy of Numeral’s Product Category List available for reference. This will help you quickly locate the correct category when editing or creating products.

Edit an Existing Product

  1. Go to Developers → Products.

  2. Click the Edit icon next to the product you want to update.

  3. Search for and select the correct Product Category.

  4. Save your changes.

Add a New Product

  1. Navigate to Developers → Products → Create Product.

  2. Enter the Product ID (this should match the Product ID in your sales platform).

  3. Add the Product Name.

  4. Select or type the appropriate Product Category.

  5. Click Create Product to save.

Correct product categorization is essential for accurate tax calculation, so be sure to let us know if anything is unclear or you need support.

Step 3: Confirm a Global Address in Numeral

In your Numeral dashboard:

  1. Go to Developers.

  2. Confirm that a Global Address is set.

This is typically your company’s legal address and is required for tax calculations.

Step 4: Install the Numeral App in NetSuite

Before you proceed, add NetSuite as a Connection in your Numeral dashboard.

Once NetSuite is connected in your Numeral dashboard, follow these steps to enable the Numeral Tax app within NetSuite:

  1. Click the […] menu in the top-right corner of your NetSuite instance.

  2. Navigate to SuiteApps.

  3. Locate the Numeral tile.

  4. Click Install.

After installation:

  • The Numeral SuiteTax plug-in will override NetSuite’s default tax calculation

  • NetSuite will send tax calculations to Numeral

  • Numeral will write the tax summary back into the transaction

To Confirm the Plug-In Is Enabled

  • In NetSuite, go to CustomizationManage Plug-Ins

  • Ensure there is a check next to Numeral SuiteTax Engine

💡 You can also use this setting as a temporary kill switch if troubleshooting is needed.

Step 5: Add Your Numeral API Keys in NetSuite

In NetSuite:

  1. Go to Customization → Lists, Records, and Fields → Record Types.

  2. Search for Numeral Credentials and click List.

  3. Click Edit.

  4. Paste in the API keys for your specified environment from the Developers tab of your Numeral dashboard.

Save your changes.

Step 6: Configure Tax Fields in NetSuite

To allow taxes to post correctly to invoices, NetSuite requires specific fields to be populated. These fields live under Numeral Credentials > List page in NetSuite:

You’ll need to complete the following fields:

  • Numeral Nexus

  • Numeral Tax Code

  • Numeral Tax Type

Although Numeral’s API doesn’t rely on the meaning of these codes, NetSuite requires them in order to apply tax to transactions.

Where to Find Each Code

  1. Numeral Nexus

    • Go to Setup → Tax → Nexuses.

    • Copy the internal ID for a specific state.

    • Use the same state consistently in the steps below.

  2. Numeral Tax Code

    • Go to Setup → Tax → Tax Codes.

    • Copy any valid tax code.

  3. Numeral Tax Type

    • Go to Setup → Tax → Tax Types.

    • Copy the tax type associated with the same state used for the Nexus.

⚠️ Important: The Nexus and Tax Type must reference the same state.

Testing the Integration

Once setup is complete, you should test tax calculation on a sample invoice.

Create a Test Invoice in NetSuite

  1. Go to Transactions → Sales → Create Invoice.

  2. Select a customer.

  3. In the Shipping section, add a shipping address.

  4. Under Items, add one of your products.

  5. Select a value in the Location field.

  6. Click Add to add the item.

  7. Click Preview Tax.

✅ If everything is configured correctly, you should see a tax rate applied to the invoice.
