Your choice of Shopify Tax service directly affects how sales tax is calculated and reported for your business. While Numeral can prepare and file your returns regardless of which service you use—or even if you don’t use one at all—the tax service you select plays a key role in troubleshooting and in minimizing the risk of under- or over-collection. In general, Shopify Tax provides more accurate calculations than Shopify Basic (discontinued) or Shopify Manual, making it a more reliable option as your business grows.
While we typically recommend staying on Shopify Tax, the decision ultimately rests with you. Our team put this article together to help you make an informed decision that works best for you and your business.
⚠️ Shopify Basic (Discontinued)
Shopify Basic is a legacy service that sets standard tax rates for each state and county. It does not update rates based on product categories or order ZIP codes, which can lead to discrepancies in tax collection, especially for businesses with high sales volume or registrations in multiple jurisdictions.
Accuracy & Tax Collection Methodology
Applies a standard rate per state/county without considering product-specific differences (e.g., groceries or tax-exempt items).
Uses ZIP code-level calculations, which may not reflect the precise tax owed for every order.
Can result in larger deltas (differences between tax collected vs. tax owed) in complex tax scenarios.
Cost Considerations & Limitations
Free to use.
Requires manual oversight to ensure compliance with evolving tax laws.
⚠️ As of July 1, 2025, Basic Tax will no longer be available to new merchants in the U.S., though existing users can continue without interruption. It remains available in supported regions outside the U.S.
Shopify Manual
Shopify Manual allows merchants to enter and manage their own tax rates for each locality. While it offers full control over tax settings—similar to Shopify Basic—it lacks many of the automated features available with Shopify Tax. Merchants must manually account for and set rates in every individual jurisdiction. For context, California alone has more than 300 sales tax jurisdictions (323 according to the Sales Tax Institute), and rules change frequently. Without careful oversight and configuration, this approach can lead to discrepancies in tax collection, particularly for businesses with high sales volume or multi-state registrations.
Accuracy & Tax Collection Methodology
Users have full control over tax rates for every jurisdiction.
Does not automatically calculate rates based on tax registrations or product categories.
Does not provide recommendations for product categorization.
Lacks rooftop-level accuracy, so taxes may not always reflect the precise rate for each customer location.
Cost Considerations & Limitations
Can reduce platform fees but increases the risk of human error.
Requires ongoing monitoring and manual adjustments to maintain compliance.
Recommended only for merchants with small, simple sales footprints or specialized tax needs.
⚠️ Numeral does not provide automated support for this setup. Because many states have hundreds of tax jurisdictions, we cannot:
Troubleshoot discrepancies between tax collected and tax owed
Assist with entering or verifying manual tax rates
Provide guidance on which rates to set in Shopify
Manage sales tax holiday settings
Shopify Tax
Shopify Tax provides automated sales tax calculation at the product and rooftop level, offering highly precise rates even within a single ZIP code. It is the most sophisticated Shopify tax service available.
Accuracy & Tax Collection Methodology
Calculates taxes based on product category and shipping location.
“Rooftop accuracy” ensures even homes within the same ZIP code are charged the correct rate.
High accuracy reduces discrepancies between tax collected vs. owed when properly configured.
Cost Considerations & Limitations
Fees are capped at $5,000 per region per calendar year.
Requires correct product categorization and proper Shopify Tax settings for optimal performance.
Best suited for businesses with high sales volume, multiple product categories, or complex multi-state registrations.
⚠️ Numeral does not monitor Shopify Tax settings in real time. Support is provided upon request, so your team will be responsible for categorizing new products after our one-time review (typically completed during onboarding or when switching to Shopify Tax as requested).
Please notify our team whenever you’d like us to review or update your settings.
Common Shopify Tax Engine Issues
Even with proper settings, Shopify Tax may occasionally be inaccurate. Shopify has confirmed that these issues can happen due to:
Fallback tax engine: If Shopify Tax is unavailable due to latency or downtime, the system defaults to a less accurate tax engine that only uses ZIP codes.
Incomplete customer addresses: Missing address details can cause incorrect calculations.
Unsupported payment methods: Deferred payments or express checkouts (e.g., Apple Pay, PayPal Express) may not always trigger Shopify Tax correctly.
For example, one client saw tax inconsistencies primarily on orders paid via Apple Pay, which Shopify Tax did not fully support at the time.
⚠️ If you encounter issues like these, you will need to contact Shopify directly for in-depth troubleshooting, as these cases are outside our support scope.
