What is Zapier?

Zapier is an online platform that allows you to automate workflows by connecting the apps and services you use.

Loads of software and service providers host their easy API access on Zapier. This allows you to set up an automation workflow between them instead of writing code or setting up an API to build this integration.

Check out all the apps on Zapier: https://zapier.com/apps

To give an example, Zapier can automatically send out a data file after the data report is ready. The destinations of the file can be selected from the apps hosted on Zapier and you can manage lots of automatic tasks for different platforms or destinations on one platform.

How does Zapier work

Zapier connects web apps by easily moving data from one to the other. Each time an event occurs in app A, it triggers a specific action in app B.

It does so by letting you create “Zaps”, aka a Zapier integration, automated workflows that consist of a trigger and one or more actions. When you set up and activate a new Zap, it will run its action(s) every time the trigger event occurs.

To get back to that example: let’s say you set a Zap between an Octoparse task and Dropbox. In this case, the change in task status (as a trigger) will lead to an event of delivery of the newly added dataset to Dropbox. In this case, the completion status of the task is the trigger event and uploading files to Dropbox is the automated action that follows.

How to get started with Zapier

  • Zapier Account

To use Zapier, you need to create a Zapier account. You can sign up for a free account, which allows you to use Zapier for 100 tasks per month. Note that a task is different from a Zap, as you can set up a Zap that will probably be used more than once and generate loads of tasks.

Every time you trigger this Zap you’re asking it to perform a task. This means that one Zap that you use once a day accounts for around 30 tasks a month. There is also the option to choose one of their paid plans, which gives you more tasks per month. But you can always start with a free account to figure out what Zapier can do for you (check Zapier rating here: Zapier Pricing)

  • Octoparse Account

On the Octoparse side, you need to own a paid Octoparse account and an actionable task with existing data (run the task at least once in the last half hour ).

To be more specific, you shall have a standard plan, professional plan, or an enterprise plan to use Zapier.

  • Account for the destination app

You shall own an account that works for the destination app. If your destination is a database, like Dropbox, you shall own a Dropbox account first.

How can you use Zapier with Octoparse?

  • Automatically deliver the data file from Octoparse to an online file management software with Zapier (eg, Octoparse to Google Drive, Airtable, Tableau, Dropbox)

  • Automatically deliver the data row from Octoparse to an online database with Zapier (eg, Octoparse to Google Sheet)

  • Automatically send task notifications from Octoparse to the team platform (eg, Octoparse to Slack, Lark, Skype)

......there are more scenarios you can explore with Ocatoparse and Zapier. Keep us posted if you have any interesting findings.
