Online Notarization for Non-U.S. Signers Invited by a Business

Learn how to complete identity verification and an online notarization if you do not have a U.S. Social Security number, U.S. address, or U.S. credit history

If you have been invited to an online notarization by a business using OneNotary, you can complete the process even if you are not a U.S. citizen and/or do not have a U.S.-issued Social Security number or U.S. address.

Signers invited through a Business account can use Biometric Identity Verification, which does not rely on U.S. credit records or Knowledge-Based Authentication (KBA).

Here's what to expect from the moment you receive your invitation until your notarization is complete.

1. Open Your Invitation and Review the Session

You will receive an email from no-reply@onenotary.com containing an invitation to your online notarization.

Click Get Started to access the session.

Depending on how the business has prepared your session, you may also be asked to:

  • Upload a document if it has not already been provided

  • Add another participant if someone else needs to join the notarization

  • Fill in the information in the document before proceeding

If everything has already been prepared for you, simply review the information and continue.

2. Prepare for the Online Session

Before continuing, review and accept the Terms of Service and run a quick camera and connection check. Make sure your camera, microphone, and speakers are working and that your browser has permission to access them.

Once the check is complete, proceed to identity verification.

3. Select Biometric Identity Verification

  • Enter your personal information.

  • Under the identity verification options, select Biometric verification (doesn't require SSN).

  • You will need two valid forms of photo identification. Your first ID must be a valid passport. Have your passport and second photo ID available before starting.

Biometric verification is particularly useful if you do not have a U.S. Social Security number, U.S. address, or sufficient U.S. credit history to complete SSN-based verification.

4. Verify Your Identity Using Your Phone

Biometric identity verification must be completed on a smartphone.

Scan the QR code displayed on the screen with your phone, or select Proceed With Text Message to receive the verification link by text.

Follow the instructions on your phone to complete the verification. You will be asked to:

  1. Capture your passport as your first ID.

  2. Complete a biometric selfie check

  3. Capture your second form of ID

The available ID options will be shown during the verification process.

Once your identity has been successfully verified, return to the device where you started the notarization. If you started the process on your phone, you can simply continue there.

Your session will automatically update to show that identity verification has been completed.

5. Start Notarization

After completing identity verification, you will be placed in the queue for a notary. A notary is usually assigned within a few minutes.

Keep the session page open while you wait.

  • When the notary is ready, you will see a notification on the screen. Click Connect before the timer expires to join the live audio-video session.

During the session, the notary will confirm your identity and guide you through the notarization.

  • Fill in or sign the document when instructed by the notary. The notary will then complete the required notarial fields, signature, and seal.

6. Access Your Completed Document

After the session, you will receive an email from OneNotary with:

  • A link to access your completed notarized document

  • An access code

Follow the link in the email and enter the access code when prompted to download your document.
