To add an order tag onto your shipping label in Shopify, you can follow these steps using Shopify's built-in automation or an app, depending on how customized you want it to be. Shopify’s native setup doesn’t support directly printing order tags on shipping labels, but there are a couple of workarounds:

Option 1: Use Shopify Flow (for Shopify Plus stores)

If you’re using Shopify Plus, Shopify Flow allows you to automatically add tags and modify order notes that can show up when processing shipments.

Steps:

  1. Create an Automation in Shopify Flow:

    • Go to Shopify Admin > Apps > Shopify Flow.

    • Create a new workflow with the following trigger:

      • Trigger: Order Created / Order Paid

      • Condition: Add conditions that determine when tags should be applied (e.g., shipping method, product type, etc.).

      • Action: Add a tag (e.g., “Priority Shipping”).

  2. Modify Order Notes or Internal Notes:

    • You can use Flow to add the tag to the order note field.

    • This note will show up for reference when creating a label, but it won't appear directly on the shipping label without an app.

Option 2: Use Shopify Shipping App Integrations

To print order tags directly on shipping labels, you will need a shipping label app that allows you to customize label data.

Recommended Apps:

  • Order Printer Pro

  • ShipStation or Shippo

  • Easyship

Steps:

  1. Install a Shipping App:

    • Go to the Shopify App Store and search for one of the shipping apps mentioned above.

  2. Customize Labels:

    • In the shipping app, look for Label Customization options.

    • Map your Order Tags or Order Notes to be included on the label under a custom text field.

Option 3: Add Tags Manually via Shopify Admin

If you need a quick, manual solution for specific orders:

  1. Tag the Order:

    • Go to Orders > Select Order > Add Tag (on the right-hand side).

    • Add a tag such as “Express Shipping.”

  2. Use Order Notes:

    • Add the same tag into the Order Notes field.

    • When printing the shipping label, reference the order notes to manually include it on the printed label (as part of your packing slip).

Option 4: Use Shopify Scripts (Advanced Customization)

For advanced users familiar with Shopify’s API or with developer help, you could:

  1. Use Shopify’s API to pull order data and create custom shipping labels.

  2. Programmatically add tags and include them in the label format you generate using a third-party shipping tool.

These methods provide flexibility whether you want automation, app support, or a manual approach. If your store uses Shopify Plus, Shopify Flow is your best bet for seamless automation.

Why use Order Tags with Subscriptions?

  1. Adding order tags on shipping labels for subscriptions helps streamline fulfillment by flagging priority or special packaging requirements, ensuring recurring customers receive consistent, personalized service.

  2. It allows merchants to easily track and differentiate subscription orders, making it simpler to manage inventory, prepare customized shipments, or offer VIP handling for loyal subscribers.
