We know experiencing internet connectivity issues can be frustrating, especially when teachers are trying to take attendance or the lunch line is a mile long. So, if you are experiencing slow load times or error messages when trying to navigate your jmc site, check out these potential setbacks and solutions to help diagnose and resolve issues that might be related to internet connectivity.

Ugh, jmc seems to be running slow today. What can I do?

  1. Check your local internet connection. If you are hardwired to the internet, your connection will typically be better than if you are using Wi-Fi. If you are using Wi-Fi, check your proximity to an access point. Moving closer to an access point may improve your internet connection.

  2. Contact your Internet Service Provider to see if latency or bandwidth appear to be an issue.

    1. Latency: the amount of time it takes for an individual request to travel across the internet and successfully return to your computer.

Fun Fact: Each request travels its own unique path across the internet and may experience slowdowns along the way. Ask your internet provider if they can reroute your requests to speed up traffic.

    2. Bandwidth: the total capacity available from your internet service provider to transmit data over a network connection in a given amount of time.

Helpful Tip: jmc recommends your local internet speed at each building be at least 5Mb download and 5Mb upload (10 Mb is even better!) for jmc, over and above your normal day-to-day school internet usage. Work with your internet provider to increase your connection's bandwidth.

  3. Have your tech professional run a traceroute when the site is slow to share with your Internet Service Provider so they can better understand why your pages are loading slowly.

Helpful Tip: Mac, Windows and Linux users can run a traceroute in seconds with just a few simple steps! Search the internet for "running a traceroute" to view the instructions for your specific operating system.

Yikes! I am receiving errors on certain pages in jmc. What can I do?

  1. Update your internet browser to the most current version to avoid connectivity issues caused by running out-of-date applications.

Helpful Tip: jmc recommends Google Chrome or Firefox to maximize your experience.

  2. Clear your internet browser's cache and cookies to remove old data that might be causing loading or formatting issues on jmc sites.

Help! I can't connect to my jmc site...

  1. Have your tech professional whitelist your school's jmc url on your content filter to prevent jmc from being blocked by your school.

Fun Fact: "Whitelisting" a website is the process of defining a site as being trustworthy to prevent your content filter from blocking access.

  2. Update your computer's operating system to the most current version to include security or driver updates that may be preventing jmc from running smoothly.

  3. Review settings on your school's server to prevent firewalls or content filters from blocking access to jmc.
