Using Projects in ChatGPT
Updated over a week ago

As of December 13th, 2024, ChatGPT Projects are available for all Plus, Team, and Pro users. Projects for ChatGPT Enterprise users will become available in 2025!

Projects provide a new way to group files and chats for personal use, simplifying the management of work that involves multiple chats. Projects keep chats, files, and custom instructions in one place. Use them for ongoing work, or just to keep things tidy.

To create a new project, click on the + button next to Project on the top-right of the page:

Select a name for your project and select Create Project.

Conversations share context with your uploaded files and custom instructions. Please note that chats in Projects use GPT-4o, and the model cannot be changed.

Conversations in Projects support the following features:

  • Canvas

  • Advanced data analysis

  • DALL•E

  • Search

Currently, connectors to add files from Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive are not supported.

You can delete your project by selecting the dots next to your Project name and selecting Delete project. This will delete your files, conversations, and custom instructions in the Project. Once they are deleted, they cannot be recovered.

Projects are currently for individual use and cannot be shared with other users at this time.

Projects can be created and edited on ChatGPT web and the ChatGPT Windows app. Users on mobile and the macOS can only view and chat in Projects.

Set Custom Instructions for your Project

You can set Custom Instructions in your Project by selecting Add instructions in your Project page. You can revisit this button at any time to reference or update your Instructions.

In the pop-up, set your instructions and select Save. You can ask ChatGPT to focus on certain topics, respond with a certain tone, or format your responses in a specific way.

Instructions set in your Project will not interact with any conversations outside of your Project, and will supersede custom instructions set in your ChatGPT account.

Please note that your Projects will reference your memories.

Add files to to your Project

You can upload files by selecting Add files and dragging files onto the pop-up model, or selecting the Add files button.

When you upload a file to a Project, the file will only apply to the context of that Project.

Please note that there is a limit to the amount of files that can be uploaded into your project.

You can delete a file by selecting Add files and selecting the x next to the file name. Deleted files cannot be recovered.

Move existing chats into a Project

Please note that chats in Projects use GPT-4o, and the model cannot be changed.

Any conversations moved into a Project will continue in GPT-4o.

You can move any existing or previous chats into a Project by selecting the three dots next to the name of a prior conversation and selecting Add to project.

Once you move the conversation into the Project, the conversation can now continue in the context of the Project. This means that any Custom Instructions and files in your Project will impact responses from ChatGPT for that conversation.

You can remove conversations from your Project by selecting the three dots next to the conversation title and selecting Remove. Once a conversation is removed, it will no longer have the context of your Project.
