Tipping, Splitting, and Group Tabs

How tipping works (set/edit before closing), what you’ll see with service charges, and a note that splitting/multi-payer tabs are coming soon.

Tipping in OpenTab is designed to be both fast and flexible. When you open a tab you’ll see suggested amounts, but you can set your own tip before opening and change it any time prior to closing. Once you close, tips can’t be edited, so make any adjustments before you swipe to finish.

At the moment, splitting a check or having multiple people pay the same tab from different phones isn’t supported. We know groups use OpenTab together, and we’re actively building a smooth, intuitive splitting experience. In the meantime, if the restaurant applies a service charge or auto-gratuity, it will show up right on your tab so there are no surprises.

Tipping

  • You’ll see suggested tip options when opening a tab.

  • You can customize or edit your tip before opening and any time before closing.

  • After you close the tab, tips can’t be edited.

Splitting & group pay

  • Splitting and multi-payer tabs aren’t supported yet. We’re actively exploring this.

  • Restaurants may add service charges/auto-gratuity; these will appear on your tab.
