Ever wonder when that one weird thing happens? Don't worry, we've thought of everything.

A Customer Opens a Tab

When a customer opens a tab in OpenTab, a new tab will appear automatically in your POS system. The order type will be "Dine-in" by default.

If you have Zones enabled in OpenTab, the tab will be opened in the Zone the customer selected when opening their tab (dining room, bar area, etc).

If you're a golf course that has Cart Selection enabled, the tab will be opened with the cart number indicated in the tab name. If you have imported tables to OpenTab, the tab will be opened with the cart's associated table selected.

A Customer Closes a Tab

The tab will be paid for and closed in your terminal, and automatically moved to the "Closed" section, not the "Paid" section. Since OpenTab applies the customer's tip automatically, there's no need for a server to update the tip at the end of the night.

The tab will close just like normal.

A Toast Led Service Fee is Applied

We track it! Service Fees will show automatically to customers through their app under the fees and taxes section. Of note, OpenTab does not track credit card surcharging. To offset this, please create an OpenTab specific Service Fee. Since OpenTab is a technology platform, Service Fees are acceptable and compliant.

Restaurant Uses Credit Card Surcharging

As mentioned above, OpenTab does not support native credit card surcharging through our Toast integration. However, since OpenTab is a technology platform, merchants are able to charge a service fee for using the platform. This is a good way to offset your surcharging program.

Large Party Tipping

Large Party Tipping will come through to OpenTab as a Service Fee, not a tip. It is important to make this distinction to customers when it applies.

A Server Closes a Tab Manually

Not to worry, we know this may happen from time to time. When a server manually closes a tab in the Toast system, the customer's OpenTab tab will close automatically. Their OpenTab receipt will have a note explaining that the tab was paid for outside of OpenTab.

A Server Adds a Partial Payment (Like a Gift Card)

When a partial payment is applied, OpenTab will pull it in automatically and show it to the customer in their app.

If a customer has a percentage tip selected, their tip is calculated on the full amount of the tab, not what is left to pay. This prevents artificially lower tips.

A Server Renames a Tab

Nothing. OpenTab still tracks and interacts with that tab just like normal.

The Tab's Table is Changed

Nothing. OpenTab still tracks and interacts with that tab just like normal.

Server is Reassigned

Nothing. OpenTab still tracks and interacts with that tab just like normal.

The Dining Option is Changed

Nothing. OpenTab still tracks and interacts with that tab just like normal.

The Tab is Split in Toast

OpenTab will continue tracking the original tab, and show updated amounts to the customer.

Merging Tabs

When a tab is merged into OpenTab tab, the OpenTab will remain open and all items merged into it will appear in the customer's app.

When an OpenTab tab is merged into a non-OpenTab tab, the items on the OpenTab tab will disappear from the customer's app, and their tab will be closed with a $0.00 total in OpenTab. Of note, you will not see a random $0.00 tab in Toast.

A Toast Led Promo Code is Applied

OpenTab will track and apply the discount automatically in the customer's app. Totals will update correctly.

When the "Send" Button is Clicked in the POS

Items will show up automatically in the customer's app.

When the "Hold" Button is Clicked in the POS

Items will show up automatically in the customer's app.

When the "Stay" Button is Clicked in the POS

Items will show up automatically in the customer's app.

When the "Send" Button is Clicked in the POS

Items will show up automatically in the customer's app.

An Item is Removed from a Tab in Toast

The item will be removed automatically from the customer's tab in OpenTab.

A Tab is Voided in Toast

The tab will close automatically in the customer's app with no charges.

A Tab or Item is Tax Exempt

Since the raw tax total number is pulled from Toast (no tax calculations are done in OpenTab), the correct tax amount will show.

A Tab is Opened with a Clocked-out Server Assigned

The tab will open properly with the server assigned, even if they are clocked out. Of note, a server is not required in OpenTab. This feature should only be used in very specific instances.

OpenTab Split Tab is Used

When OpenTab's Split Tab feature is used by customers, you will see multiple payments applied to the tab in Toast. As users close out, more payments will be applied until the entire tab is paid for.

A User Selects a Golf Cart

Depending on your restaurant's tab naming convention (set up in your OpenTab back office), the cart number will be indicated in the tab name.

If you have tables enabled, the tab will also be automatically assigned to the golf cart's associated Toast table.
