The Real Off setting defines whether a rest day is accepted by the algorithm as a “real rest” day. This setting is configured at the organization level and affects the entire scheduling process.
When this feature is enabled, the weekly real off requirement becomes active. Each staff member must have at least one real off day per week. This rule is treated as a hard constraint and must be satisfied during automatic scheduling. If the setting is disabled, the algorithm does not perform real off validation and the weekly real off requirement is not enforced.
Real Off Logic
For a day to be considered a real off, it must constitute a full and uninterrupted rest day based on the end time of the previous shift.
For example, assume a staff member starts a night shift on the 5th and completes the shift during the morning hours of the 6th. In this case, although the 6th may technically appear as a non-working day, it is not considered a real off because the shift ended in the early hours of that day.
Similarly, consider a staff member who works a long shift on the 5th, starting in the morning and ending late in the evening. Even though the shift is completed within the same calendar day, the following day may or may not be considered a real off depending on the organization’s configuration. Each organization may define its own real off criteria based on its operational structure. If the required rest conditions are not met according to the configured rules, the day will not be counted as a real off.
With this approach, partial gaps that occur after a shift are not treated as rest days; only full and valid rest days are recognized as real off.
Enabling the Setting at the Organization Level
The Real Off feature is activated using a toggle in the Organization screen.
When enabled, it is possible to define whether the day following specific shifts will be counted as a real off. This configuration can be applied to all shifts or defined separately on a shift-by-shift basis.
This allows certain shifts to be configured so that the following day is not considered a real off.
If the setting is disabled, real off validation is not applied and the weekly real off requirement does not take effect.
Global Shift-Based Control
When the Real Off setting is enabled, separate control can be applied for each shift.
This is configured by clicking the edit (pencil) icon next to the relevant shift in the Global Shifts screen. In the Edit Global Shift window, the configuration is managed under the Rules tab.
Here:
It can be defined whether the day following the relevant shift will be considered a real off.
The setting can be enabled or disabled per shift.
The configuration can be applied individually to each shift.
Weekly Real Off Requirement
When the Real Off feature is enabled, the algorithm enforces that each staff member must have at least one real off day per week within the relevant period.
This rule:
Is a hard constraint.
Must be satisfied during automatic scheduling.
If not satisfied, a valid schedule cannot be generated.
This structure ensures fair and realistic rest validation, particularly in organizations with shifts extending into late hours or involving full-day work patterns.
