Can I just plug and play my modem?
If you’ve purchased a modem, router or home gateway from a previous internet service provider (ISP), you may need to change some settings to make it compatible with our network.
When you buy a modem from an ISP, the modem is preconfigured out of the box to work and perform better on their network. You don’t have to get a new modem every time you switch providers or move, but you may have to change the modem settings for it to work. Try rebooting your modem first – if that doesn't work, then reset and configure your modem. See the Set up FAQs below.
Do I have the right modem, router or gateway?
Do I have the right modem, router or gateway?
A modem is a device that helps you connect to the internet. A router is a device that connects to the modem and uses wi-fi technology to connect your laptops, mobiles, computers and other devices wirelessly. A gateway acts as both a modem and a router but is commonly just called a modem. You need to make sure that your modem, router or gateway is compatible with your connection type.

If your modem includes 4G or 5G backup, there’s often a SIM card in the modem. This may interfere with your new ISP connection. Simply remove the SIM card before using your modem. If this doesn't work, then you may need to reset or reconfigure your modem.

Is my modem compatible with a phone plan (VoIP)?
Some ISPs preconfigure their modems to only work on their network for phone service or VoIP. These modems are considered locked for voice calls but unlocked for internet data. If you need a phone service or VoIP but want to use your previous modem, it may be locked to your previous network and won’t work on a different ISP network.
