Short answer

Important: You will only see peak and off-peak times on your bill if your meter is configured to a Time of Use tariff.

What you can do

This article explains how to:

  • view your bill to see your peak and off-peak times, but only if your meter is configured to a Time of Use tariff

  • request to change to a Time of Use tariff

  • view Energy Plan Documents (Victoria/WA) or Basic Plan Information Documents (ACT, NSW, SA and Qld) for your connection address or suburb. This will show you peak and off-peak times that apply to meters configured to a Time of Use tariff by energy plan type. Note, you may not have this configuration at your address, but you can contact us to request a change to Time of Use, and we'll check it out for you.

See peak and off-peak times on your bill (Time of Use tariff only)

  1. Take a look at your electricity bill under New charges and credits (this will be on page 2 or 3 of your bill).

  2. If your meter is configured to a Time of Use tariff, you'll see the time periods that apply to peak, off-peak and shoulder (if applicable). If you don't a Time of Use tariff on your meter, you won't see peak or off-peak wording or times.

You can find your last bill in My Account or the Origin app. See also how to view bills and payments.

Request a change to a Time of Use tariff

Why change?

A Time of Use tariff could suit you if you're using most of your energy during the day and on weekends, and you're out a lot at night.

Conditions apply

To get a Time of Use tariff:

  • it must be available at your location, and

  • your electricity meter must be able to measure energy use at different times of the day and night (usually this requires a smart meter)

How to change

Contact us and an energy specialist will check whether a Time of Use tariff is available at your location. Tariff changes are usually limited to once a year and a meter change fee applies.

View energy plan documents for your connection address

This is an information-gathering exercise, to know which plans and tariffs are available at your connection address.

  1. Enter your connection address or postcode to view distributors, plans and tariff types for an address or suburb

  2. If you're not on a Time of Use tariff, you could contact us to see if a change to Time of Use tariff is possible at your address

Examples

  • Searching on an address or postcode will show you if a Time of Use tariff is available

  • If you're in Victoria or WA, clicking the link for the energy plan and tariff you're interested in downloads the Energy Fact Sheet for the plan. On page 2, you'll see peak and off-peak times for that plan and tariff.

  • If you're in the ACT, NSW, SA or Qld, clicking the link for the energy plan or tariff you're interested in opens the Australian Government’s Energy Made Easy website

  • Entering your postcode displays more information about the plan, including its peak and off-peak times (if applicable)

About peak and off-peak times

If your meter is set to Time of Use, you'll pay different rates for electricity during different times of the day and night. These are called peak and off-peak rates – and sometimes you may have a shoulder rate as well. In short:

  • peak is when energy costs the most

  • shoulder (if applicable) is a bit less than peak

  • off-peak is when energy is cheapest

Knowing when different rates kick in can help you manage energy costs by moving your usage from peak to shoulder or off-peak times.

Understand tariffs to know if peak and off-peak times apply

Your electricity meter is configured with a tariff (or rate) that may be a Single rate or a Time of Use rate. Peak and off-peak times only apply if you're on a Time of Use rate. If you're on a Single rate, your rates are the same at all times of day and night.

The tariff on your meter depends on your meter type and where you live, and it was set up when your meter was installed. Along the way, it may have been changed to cater for a change in how and when you use energy – for example, if you installed a solar system with batteries.
