Short answer

  • When you move, you can sign up with Origin at your new property

  • If you book your move online before 1pm Monday to Friday excluding public holidays, in many cases we can connect electricity the next business day (terms and conditions apply). See ’What you can do’ in this article for instructions.

  • Electricity customers who book a move to a Queensland address will also get a visual safety inspection (VSI) booking for their new property

  • For same-day connections, call 13 MOVE (13 66 83)

  • Origin customers can close their old accounts through My Account or the Origin app

What you can do

Book your move online

Book your energy connections online and in advance by following these steps.

  1. Go to our moving house page, choose the services to compare and connect and let us know where you’re moving to. If you:

    • book online before 1pm Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays), in many cases we can connect electricity the next business day (terms and conditions apply)

    • request a natural gas connection, we may need at least four business days’ notice before your move-in date, which depends on the state you live in and the time you place your request

  2. Follow the prompts to request a connection date, then review and confirm your order

Get updates by SMS or email, plus see move status in My Account

We’ll keep you updated by SMS or email to let you know how everything’s tracking. You’ll also see your move status in My Account when you log in.

Close your account at the old place

  1. If you’re moving out but a housemate is staying, contact us to let us know before you close your old account. They’ll need to become the primary account holder for your old property by setting up a new account in their name.

  2. When you’re ready, disconnect your old property through My Account or the Origin app. When you disconnect through My Account, this triggers a final meter read, a final bill and closes your old account.

Good to know: Sometimes it’s better to close your account the day after your move. Depending on where you live, the supply can be turned off from 7am on the day you choose.

Queensland properties – manage visual safety inspection booking

If you move to an address in Queensland, when you book an electricity move online you’ll also get a visual safety inspection (VSI) booking.

You’ll need to be at your new property for the inspection, and we’ll send you details of the date and a reminder just before it happens – including the five-hour appointment window that’s allocated.

You may not need your VSI booking if the power at the new property has been on within the last 30 days. If you think this applies, please call us on 13 24 61 and we’ll check that for you – and cancel your VSI booking if necessary.

Important notes

  • For same-day connections, call 13 MOVE (13 66 83). An energy expert will see if they can get you connected the same day and let you know if any extra fees apply. See also Moving fees.

  • If you move and you have problems – for example, your power’s not on – call us straight away on 13 24 61. Give our team your new address and moving date and they’ll be able to help.

  • Origin doesn’t charge moving fees but your distributor may charge disconnection and/or connection fee (which we pass through to you on your bill). Fees vary depending on the state you live in. See Moving fees for more info.

  • Disconnecting a property is different from removing the energy supply.

    • Disconnecting through My Account or the Origin app triggers a final meter read, finalises billing for your old address and closes your account. You don’t have to be at your old property for your final meter read, but make sure the meter reader has clear and safe access to your meter. (You can’t submit a self meter read for final bills.)

    • Removing the energy supply removes the physical service from the property. For example, you may want to remove your natural gas supply if you run your house only on solar power and grid electricity and don’t have any gas appliances.
