Prepare for next meter read

When you have a basic meter, your usage gets read and recorded manually, by a meter reader (employed by your distributor).

Should they have any trouble accessing your meter, it’s likely you’ll be issued an Estimated bill (based on your usage history), rather than an Actual bill, which uses the reading.

To avoid estimated bills and ensure your meter gets read – here’s two things you can do:

  1. Follow the steps below to ensure safe and clear access to your meter, ready for your next meter read date

Preparing your property for a meter read

Meter readers need clear access to your meter when they enter your property. This means that there should be no obstacles in the way or around your meter so they can get in and out quickly, while also staying safe while they visit your property.

Here’s what you need to do to get ready:

  1. Check gate and meter locks: The meter reader needs to be able to enter your property and access your meter easily. Think about removing any gate locks and locks on your meter box during the scheduled meter reading timeframe. Alternatively, you could buy a secure lock that gives access to authorised people only and let us know the details.

  2. Secure pets on premises: Keep your pets secured in a safe place, preferably inside – this will make sure they don’t get out your gate or hinder the meter read process. If the technician feels unsafe at any time, they won’t enter your property.

  3. Ensure clear access: A technician needs clear access to your meter box. Make sure the pathway to reach it is clear and there’s nothing covering the meter box, like overgrown plants, building items etc.

Have any important meter access instructions for your property, or access code for your gate? Just let us know.
