Change primary account holder

Change the primary energy or internet account holder when someone moves or dies, or to align a concession card with an account.

Short answer

To change the primary account holder on an energy or internet account, the new account holder must start a new agreement with Origin. This process is straightforward and free of charge. Here's how to go about it:

  • Residential electricity and natural gas: Self-serve the change online. See also 'What you can do' in this article for instructions.

  • Other account holders, including business and internet: This article explains who to contact depending on which account needs to change.

What you can do

These instructions are for the new primary account holder.

Residential electricity and natural gas – self-serve online

  1. Enter your connection address, choose the services you would like to be the primary account holder for (electricity, natural gas or both) and select Get started

  2. If you're an existing customer, select Yes to have some of your details filled in automatically; otherwise, select No

  3. Enter the address the new agreement will be for, then select Continue

  4. Choose add-ons (if applicable) then select Next: Your details

  5. Complete your personal info, then select Continue

  6. Compete your property information, including the date you will become primary account holder, then select Next: payment info

  7. Complete the How you'll pay screen then select Review and confirm

  8. Read the Review and confirm page and the terms and conditions, then select Confirm and submit to create your new primary account and contract

Other accounts, including business and internet – contact us

  1. Contact us so we can make the change for you.

  2. When you call us, we'll ask you to confirm your:

    • full name

    • date of birth

    • phone number

    • email address

What happens next

  • We'll email the new primary account holder their new contract pack, which includes their new account number and details of the energy plan or agreement they've chosen

  • If the new primary account holder:

    • has other accounts with Origin, they can log in to My Account with their existing log in details to see their new account

    • has never had an Origin account, they will need to register for My Account before logging in to view their new account details

  • We'll send the final bill to the previous primary account holder and automatically end the old agreement on the chosen handover date
