For most customers, during the 2024–25 financial year the:

  • household rebate is $300, applied in quarterly instalments of $75

  • small business rebate is $325 (if eligible), applied in quarterly instalments of $81.25

There's no need to call to get the rebate, we'll apply it to your account automatically. You’ll see it as a credit on your electricity bill, usually on page 2. Look for the description ‘Australian Government Energy Bill Relief’. See also When to expect your rebate.

There are some differences for customers in Queensland with more than one electricity account, for WINconnect customers, for Origin small business customers in Victoria and for our embedded electricity customers. (Read this article for more information.)

Summary

The Australian Government is partnering with state and territory governments to provide up to $3.5 billion in electricity bill rebates for all eligible households and eligible small businesses to ease cost of living pressures in 2024–25. The rebate is in addition to other concessions, rebates and cost-of-living support packages available from your state or territory government.

This article explains who’s eligible, some state-based differences and how and when the rebate will be applied to your electricity account.

More info

Eligibility

For most states and territories, eligible customers receive the rebate on their primary electricity account only. The exception is in Queensland, where customers with more than one eligible residential or business account get the rebate on each account they hold.

Households

All Australian households will receive a $300 rebate applied in quarterly instalments of $75 from the Energy Bill Relief Fund in the 2024–25 financial year.

Small businesses

Small businesses could be eligible for a $325 rebate from the Energy Bill Relief Fund in the 2024–25 financial year. In all states and territories except Victoria, it's applied in quarterly instalments of $81.25. In Victoria, it's applied as a lump sum.

A small business must meet eligibility criteria to get the rebate. The government’s Energy Bill Relief Fund 2024-25 outlines the criteria.

Embedded (centralised) electricity customers

If your household or small business in an embedded network like an apartment building or a retail store in shopping centre, and you get an Origin electricity bill, you’ll be eligible for:

  • the household rebate of $300, applied in quarterly instalments of $75 – except in the ACT, where this is applied as a lump-sum credit, or

  • the small businesses rebate of $325 rebate, applied in quarterly instalments of $81.25 – except in the ACT and Victoria, where this is applied as a lump-sum credit

If you’re living in a setting like a retirement village or caravan park and you don’t get an electricity bill from Origin, check with your state government to see if you’re eligible and how to go about claiming it. We’ve included state and territory government website links at the end of this article.

If you’re a NSW WINconnect customer, you’ll need to apply for the rebate through the NSW state government.

How we apply the rebate

From 1 July 2024, we’ll apply the 202425 rebate directly into your household or small business electricity accounts. For most customers, this will be applied in quarterly instalments. And, in most cases, if you’re eligible and receive your own electricity bill there's nothing you need to do – it'll happen automatically. See ‘When to expect your rebate’ for the timetable of rebate payments by state and customer type.

See also the government’s Energy Bill Relief Fund 2024-25 website for more information about eligibility and situations where the rebate isn’t automatic.
