Short answer

Having trouble connecting to the internet? Can’t connect your devices to your wi-fi modem? Restarting your modem may fix the problem. This article explains how.

What you can do

  1. Depending on your modem design, you can press or slide the power button to turn off your modem. If you can't find a power button, unplug the power cord.

  2. Wait 15 minutes then turn the modem back on. This step helps to refresh the connection and often resolves temporary issues. It's important to wait for the full 15 minutes. The waiting period allows the internal parts of the modem to power down and reset.

  3. After 15 minutes, turn the modem back on (or plug your modem back in). You may notice the lights on the modem blinking or cycling through different colours. This is normal and indicates the modem is going through its usual start up process.

  4. Wait for a connection to establish. This might take a take a few minutes. If the modem successfully connects, the lights should turn solid green. If you’re not seeing solid green lights, repeat steps 1–4.

  5. Open a web browser on your computer or mobile device and try loading a website. If the page loads without any issues, your modem restart was successful and your modem should be functioning optimally.
