Faster speeds are now available on the nbn network, but to really feel the difference, your home setup needs to be up to scratch. Here’s how to make sure you’re getting the most out of your connection.

Check your modem

Your choice of modem or router, and how you set it up within your home, could limit you from utilising the maximum speed of your internet plan. If you’re not experiencing the expected speeds, it could be your hardware. Older modems may not have the right technology to support high speed tiers.

Using an Origin-supplied modem?

Devices like the TP-Link VX230v or eero 6+ are already built to handle higher speeds. If you purchased these devices recently, you’ll be good to go. If you purchased a modem from us over 5 years ago, you may not be getting the most from your device. We have a range of modems and routers for you to explore. For a better internet experience, nbn co recommend using a modem no more than 5 years old.

Using your own modem?

It’s important that you use a modem or router that’s compatible with your connection type and can support your plan speeds. There are some helpful tips from nbn co to get the most from your modem or router. If you’ve tried troubleshooting from the list below and you’re still not seeing the results you expect, upgrading your modem or router could help you unlock better performance.

Reposition your modem

Where your modem sits in your home can make a difference to your wi-fi signal. Try to do the following:

  • Place it in a central, open area, not in a cupboard or behind furniture

  • Elevate it off the floor (a shelf or table works well)

  • Keep it away from microwaves, cordless phones, and thick walls, which can interfere with the signal

  • Keep your modem/router within the line of sight of connected devices

Use Ethernet where it counts

For devices that need the most speed and stability like gaming consoles or work laptops, plugging in with an Ethernet cable can make a noticeable difference.

Restart occasionally

Just like restarting your phone or computer can help clear out glitches and keep things running smoothly, giving your modem a quick reboot every now and then can refresh your connection and improve performance. Learn how to power cycle your modem

Too many connected devices

Your home internet may not have enough bandwidth to support all of your connected devices.

What you can do:

  • Disconnect any connected devices you’re not using

  • Check to see if some of your devices are using a large amount of data

  • Check if your devices have any viruses or malware

  • Consider upgrading your plan to suit your data needs
