Smart meters

We'll explain what a smart meter does and how you can tell if you have one.

Written by Origin

Short answer

A smart meter records your electricity usage and then feeds it back to your retailer (us).

Basic meters are being replaced with smart meters. This is because basic meters can’t support new technology. So, rule changes have been made by the Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC).

Most homes and businesses in Victoria already have a smart meter. Between 1 December 2025 and 30 November 2030, smart meters will be rolled out across NSW, QLD, SA and the ACT. To learn more, visit our Smart meter rollout page.

Smart meter installation explained

We'll contact you with information about appointments and dates. One of our meter providers will replace the existing basic meter with a smart meter at your home or business. After about a week, you'll be able to see your data on your Usage screen in My Account or the app.

How long does a meter replacement take?

On the day, the meter replacement usually takes between 2 and 6 hours. The electricity supply will be interrupted for a part of that, usually for up to 2 hours. We'll be in contact with you before your meter exchange.

How long does a meter replacement take if there's more than one meter?

Some meter boards are shared, like in apartment buildings. When that happens, generally all the meters are replaced at the same time. Sometimes it can take more than one day.

How much does a smart meter cost?

If you get a smart meter as part of the Accelerated Smart Meter Rollout, you won't have to pay anything upfront or any exit fees. We’ll cover the cost of upgrading basic meters, if there are any issues with completing this upgrade we'll let you know. If the meter is requested by the customer, Origin may charge the metering installation fee. For more details visit our meter fees and charges page . If there are any onsite issues, it’s the customer’s responsibility to arrange and pay for any repairs.

Do I need to be home for the smart meter installation?

If there’s clear and safe access to your meter and switchboard, you don’t need to be home.

You’ll need to be home at the scheduled time if :

  • there's a locked gate,

  • There's a pet or livestock aren’t contained; or

  • there are other issues with access

I'm renting, do I need permission from my landlord?

If you are the account holder with Origin, you don't need your landlord's consent.

I’m building a new home, do I need a smart meter?

Yes, all meters installed in new properties will need to be smart meters.

What happens if we can’t replace your meter?

Sometimes a meter replacement can't go ahead. This is because there is something at your property that needs to be fixed. If this happens, a technician may leave a defect notice at your home or business. You can also contact us and we can explain what needs to be done. These issues could be things like:

  • Electricity that can’t be safely switched off

  • Not enough space on the meter board

  • Damaged or unsafe wiring

  • Asbestos near the meter

You may not need to fix the issue, but it must be resolved before a smart meter can be installed. Some fixes can take time and may involve costs. We recommend contacting a licensed electrician as soon as possible. If you’re a tenant and can’t arrange the work yourself, let your rental agent or rental provider know what's going on.

I’m a business customer, what does this mean for me?

Small businesses will have their basic meters replaced with smart meters. Large sites need different types of meters, which come with their own timeframes.

Understanding your smart meter data

If you've ever seen a predicted bill in My Account or the app that means you have a smart meter. We’re only able to predict upcoming bill amounts when we receive regular usage data.

We use smart meter data to calculate your bill. You can't take manual readings because smart meters don’t show a total usage number. With a smart meter, you can also choose monthly billing, so there are fewer surprises when it’s time to pay your electricity bill.

  • We get the data and check it for accuracy, then upload it to your account. You can see it on your Usage screen in My Account or the app

  • If you have a smart meter, you’ll be able to see hourly usage and multiple tabs

Why you’re getting estimated readings with a smart meter

Sometimes your smart meter can’t connect to the network. If that happens, every now and then, your meter provider might visit to manually connect to your smart meter. They collect the data to read your meter using a laptop or device. We use that data to work out your usage and your bill. If they can’t get to you, we’ll estimate your usage based on past readings.

If your smart meter is faulty, it will be replaced.
