Referral
How to refer a friend
The more people who participate in Spike, the more energy we can save during peak times, reducing the load on the grid and helping us transition to more renewable sources.
By inviting friends and family to join, both you and your referral could be rewarded with $10 you can redeem via PayPal for cash. Sometimes we run special referral campaigns where you can earn more, so keep your notifications switched on to stay in the know!
Who can be referred
Referred friends and family need to be Origin residential customers who meet the eligibility criteria, including having a digital (smart) meter that can be read remotely.
How to send a referral
Each Spike member has a unique referral invite link which can be found via the Refer tab at the bottom of your dashboard. Share this link with your friends and family to start the referral process. Make sure you have their permission to send them the link.
Receiving your referral bonus
There are a couple of things your referral needs to do before you’re both rewarded:
Complete their sign up to Origin Spike (remember, they need to be an eligible existing Origin residential customer)
Go below their Forecast Watts in a Spike event.
If your referral successfully completes all steps and earns Watts in a SpikeHour event, but you haven't received your referral points, get in touch for a review of your referral status.
All Spike referrals are governed by our Referral Terms and Conditions, which can be accessed here.
Losing Watts?
When you use more energy during a SpikeHour than you use on average (which we assess based on data from your smart meter), you’ll lose that amount of Watts. For example, if your forecast was 1000 Watts, but you used 1050 Watts during the event, you’ll lose 50 Watts.
What to do if you think you’ve lost Watts by mistake
There are a few reasons why you may have been docked points by mistake:
The smart meter data hasn’t been updated yet or is incorrect.
You chose to opt out but were still included in the SpikeHour.
Or maybe:
We didn’t send you an email or SMS to tell you about the upcoming SpikeHour.
We couldn’t turn your registered smart devices off in time.
Let us know if there is an issue. Send us screenshots of any relevant information and we'll investigate it.
How to win back watts
It shouldn’t take too long to save up the Watts you lost.
But there are some things you can do to avoid it happening again in the future:
Go to your Spike settings and make sure SpikeHour notifications are turned on
Turn off power-hungry devices during an event, such as the heater or air conditioner
Delay using appliances until later.

What smart devices does Spike support?
