How to Create & Manage Custom Groupings

Custom Groupings allow you to organize, categorize, and filter your advertising data by creating your own logical rules based on Orphex dimensions.

Written by Esra Karaoğlan

Overview

By default, Orphex displays data exactly as it comes from your ad platforms. However, sorting through hundreds of campaigns, ads, or products to see performance by brand, category, or region can be time-consuming.

Custom Groupings allow you to bundle your data into clean, meaningful categories using customized rules and logic (AND/OR operators).

Once created, a custom grouping appears as a selectable option in your performance dashboards, allowing you to:

  • View aggregated performance for specific custom segments.

  • Breakdown and analyze data at your defined group levels.

  • Filter out noise and focus on strategic performance buckets.

When Do You Need a Custom Grouping?

Use custom groupings when you want to look at performance through a business-specific lens that doesn't natively exist in your ad channels.

Situation

Example

Brand vs. Non-Brand Analysis

Grouping all campaigns containing "Brand" into one bucket and others into "Generic".

Product Categories

Grouping specific product IDs or names into "Footwear", "Apparel", or "Accessories".

Seasonal / Promo Tracking

Grouping all ad groups running Black Friday or Cyber Monday tags into a single promo view.

Creating a Custom Grouping

  1. Go to Settings → Custom Definitions.

  2. Locate the Groupings section and click the action/create button.

  3. Click the + New Custom Group button to open the configuration modal.

Grouping Configuration

1. Group Name (Required)

The identifier for your group setup. Keep it clear and descriptive so your teammates know what kind of segmentation lives inside.

2. Level (Required)

Defines the exact data level where this grouping will be configured and available.

Level

Description

Campaign

Groups data based on campaign-level dimensions.

Adgroup

Groups data rolled up at the ad group level.

Ad

Groups individual creative ads.

Creative Image

Groups metrics for specific image assets.

Creative Video

Groups metrics for specific video assets.

Product

Groups data based on catalog items (E-commerce).

⚠️ Important: A grouping defined at the Campaign level will only be visible and usable in Campaign-level dashboards and tables. It will not appear when viewing Ad or Product-level data. If you need the same logic across different layers, you must create a separate grouping for each level.

3. Description (Optional)

A brief note explaining the logic or the purpose of the group for better workspace alignment.

Setting Up Rules & Dimensions

dimensions dynamically change based on the Level you selected:

  • If Level is Campaign: Dimensions include Channel, Campaign Name, Campaign Type, etc.

  • If Level is Product: Dimensions switch to catalog specific fields like Product Name, Product ID, Category, Product Image, Product Custom Labels, etc.

Using Match Modes & Logic

You can fine-tune how Orphex captures your data by using Match Modes (such as Contains, Equals, Starts With) combined with AND / OR operators to create multi-layered conditions.

  • OR Logic: Matches data if any of the conditions are met (e.g., Campaign Name contains Brand OR Campaign Name contains Core).

  • AND Logic: Matches data only if all conditions are met simultaneously (e.g., Channel equals google_ads AND Campaign Name contains Search).

Using Custom Groupings Across Orphex

Once saved, your custom groups can be easily applied directly from your dashboard performance tables.

  1. Navigate to your desired performance tab (e.g., Campaign).

  2. Look for the Group dropdown menu located just above the main data table.

  3. Select your custom grouping from the list to instantly transform your table and chart views into your custom buckets.

Editing or Deleting a Grouping

  1. Go to Settings → Custom Definitions → Groupings.

  2. Select the grouping you wish to modify or remove.

  3. To Edit: Adjust your rules, names, or dimensions and click Save.

  4. To Delete: Click Delete.

⚠️ Warning: Deleting a custom grouping will instantly remove it from all performance dashboard selectors. This action cannot be undone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can’t I see my custom grouping on my Ad performance table?

Check the Level of your custom grouping. If you created it at the Campaign level, it will only show up on the Campaign tab. You will need to create a new grouping at the Ad level to use it there.

Can I mix Campaign dimensions with Product dimensions in a single grouping?

No. Dimensions are strictly locked to the Level you choose during creation. Campaign-level groupings can only utilize campaign metadata, while Product groupings use inventory/catalog metadata.

Who can see and use the custom groupings I create?

All custom groupings are workspace-wide. Any team member with access to your Orphex workspace can view, apply, and edit them.
