Google Tag Manager through Orphex MCP

Find out which tag change broke your tracking, undo it, and tidy up your container without clicking through forty tags.

Written by Furkan Savrun

When conversions stop for no obvious reason, Tag Manager is usually where the answer is. You can now look there, and fix it, from the same chat where you ask about your campaigns.

You need your Tag Manager account connected to Orphex, editing rights, and someone at your company to have switched changes on. Your own Google permissions still apply: this does not give you access to a container you could not already open.

Conversions stopped and nobody knows why

This is the reason most people open Tag Manager at all. It is a few questions, not one.

  1. "What was published to this container recently, and what did each one change?"

  2. "Show me the difference between the live version and the one before it."

  3. "Put it back to the previous version."

  4. "Now line that up against when conversions dropped in Google Ads."

Going back to a previous version is itself a publish, so you see which version you are returning to before anything happens.

Changing forty tags at once

A domain changes, or a field gets renamed, and it shows up in forty tags. In the Tag Manager interface that is forty separate edits and at least one typo.

Ask which tags mention the old value, then ask to update them. You see every single one with its current and new value before anything is saved. If one of them turns out wrong, you can put that one back without undoing the rest.

When two people are working in the same container

Tag Manager does not tell you that someone else has been editing the same tag until you try to publish. That is usually a bad moment to find out.

Ask who has unsaved work open, then pull in the latest published version. Any clashes come back one by one, so you can see that only one tag is genuinely contested rather than assuming everything is.

Who has access

Ask who can get into a container and what they can do. You can add people, change what they can do, and remove them, which is what an agency handover actually needs.

Preview environments are separate from the live container. Someone who can publish to staging cannot publish to live. If a preview link has stopped working, it usually just needs reauthorising, which is one request.

What you can look at

  • Your Tag Manager accounts and the containers in each

  • Every tag, trigger, variable, folder and template in a container

  • Everything about one specific tag

  • Published versions and what each one contains

  • Who has unsaved work open

  • Preview and staging environments

  • Who has access and at what level

All of this is read live, so there is no overnight delay on Tag Manager.

What you can change

  • Publish a version, go back to an earlier one, or restore a deleted one

  • Update tags, triggers and variables, in bulk or one at a time

  • Create and tidy up workspaces, and resolve clashes

  • Create, update, combine and delete containers

  • Manage preview and staging environments

  • Move things into folders, import a template

  • Add, change and remove people's access

Be careful with

⚠️ Deleting a container cannot be undone from here. A deleted version can be restored, a deleted container cannot. Read what you are agreeing to before you say yes.

How a change happens

Nothing reaches Google until you approve it. You describe what you want, it shows you exactly what would change, and it waits. You have 15 minutes to say yes; the request itself sits for a day before expiring.

Everything that happens is written down: who asked, what it was before and after, and whether it worked.

What it will not do

  • It does not create tags, triggers or variables one at a time from scratch.

  • It does not publish anything you have not seen and approved.

  • It does not undo a deleted container or workspace.

  • It does not test whether your tag actually fires. Use Tag Manager's own preview mode for that.

  • It does not open a container your own Google account cannot reach.

When something does not work

What you see

Why

What to do

It has no Tag Manager tools at all

Changes are not switched on for your account, or you only have view access

Ask for editing rights, and get in touch with us to have changes enabled

It can look but not change

You connected before changes were switched on

Sign in from the assistant again with the same account

It reports a clash when you pull in the latest version

Someone else changed the same tag

Ask for the clashes one at a time and sort them out individually

Your preview link stopped working

The environment needs reauthorising

Ask it to reauthorise that environment

Common questions

Can it publish my container?
Yes, and you see what is being published first.

Can I undo a bad publish?
Yes. Ask it to go back to the previous version.

Can it change a single tag?
Yes. The same route handles one tag or forty.

If I delete a container here, is it really gone?
Yes. It is the same container, and that cannot be undone.

Can it check whether my tag fires?
No. Use Tag Manager's own preview mode.

Does this work in ChatGPT as well as Claude?
Yes, identically.
