Connecting Orphex gives the assistant the ability to do things. Skills teach it how to do them well: which question needs which answer, how to phrase things so it does not guess, and which numbers can safely be added together.
They are optional. Everything works without them. They mainly help with the first few questions and with anything that spans several platforms at once.
The three Orphex ships

These contain method only, not data. Everything about what exists and what is allowed stays on the Orphex side, which is why a skill does not go stale when the product changes.
What difference it makes
Without one, the assistant works out how to use Orphex as it goes. That is usually fine, but it takes a couple of extra exchanges and it sometimes asks for a metric by a name your account does not use.
With one, it already knows to check what your account calls things before asking for a number, to say which account it means when you have several, and that today's numbers are not final. So it stops asking for today and then explaining why it could not.
Do you need to do anything?
If you use ChatGPT, Claude or Microsoft Copilot in the normal way, no. The connection already carries what it needs, and these skills are aimed at developer-style tools.

What it will not do
They are not required. The connection works on its own.
They do not give the assistant any extra access. What you can see and change is decided by your account and your permissions, not by a skill.
They do not contain your data.
You cannot write your own for Orphex at the moment.

No. It just helps it do the same things better.
Will they break when Orphex changes?
They carry method rather than specifics, and Orphex itself stays the source of truth, so a product change does not quietly break one.
Can I write my own?
Not through Orphex today.
