How do I know if my home has aluminum wiring?

Updated this week

Homes built between 1965-1975 may have aluminum wiring:

How to check:

  • Look at wire insulation in panel or accessible wires

  • Aluminum wire is labeled "AL" or "ALUMINUM"

  • Copper wire is labeled "CU" or "COPPER"

  • Aluminum wire appears silvery when exposed, copper is reddish

Why it matters:

  • Aluminum wiring can create fire hazards if not properly maintained

  • Requires special connectors and techniques

  • May need remediation for insurance or home sale

  • Not inherently dangerous if properly installed and maintained

If you have aluminum wiring, schedule an inspection to ensure connections are safe. We can provide remediation options if needed.
