What should I do to prepare for extreme heat or cold?

Updated this week

Prepare your systems before extreme weather hits:

Before extreme heat (90°F+):

  • Replace air filter if over 2 weeks old

  • Clear debris from outdoor unit and ensure 2-foot clearance

  • Set programmable thermostat to pre-cool home before peak heat

  • Close blinds/curtains on sun-facing windows during hottest hours

  • Verify thermostat batteries are fresh

  • Schedule AC tune-up if over 6 months since last service

Before extreme cold (below 45°F):

  • Test heating system before cold weather arrives

  • Replace air filter

  • Check thermostat operation and batteries

  • Ensure vents and returns are unblocked

  • Reverse ceiling fans to clockwise (pushes warm air down)

  • Have heating tune-up if over 6 months since last service

During extreme weather:

  • Avoid dramatic thermostat adjustments (system works harder, not faster)

  • Don't turn system off to "save money" then ask it to catch up

  • Keep interior doors open for air circulation

  • Close doors to unused rooms only if they have closable vents

Emergency preparation:

  • Know location of circuit breakers for HVAC

  • Keep our service number programmed in your phone

  • Have backup plan if system fails (hotel, family)

Systems fail most often during extreme weather due to maximum stress. Preventive maintenance before summer/winter is essential.
