Spotting Influencers in Your Customer Base

Every serious e-commerce brand has influencers hidden in their order data. People with tens of thousands — sometimes millions — of followers who already bought your product, already love it, and have never been asked to talk about it.

The opportunity most brands are missing

Magic Mind, a productivity supplement brand, discovered that Kim Kardashian had been a silent customer for nearly two years. No partnership. No gifting program. No outreach. She had simply been buying the product on her own.

When OuterSignal surfaced her as a VIP signal in week one, the Magic Mind team sent a thoughtful care package. She posted the product to her Instagram story — reaching hundreds of millions of followers. A sponsored post from her account typically costs in the millions of dollars. Magic Mind earned it organically, by recognizing the human behind an order.

This isn't a once-in-a-decade story. It's what happens when you actually know who your customers are.

How OuterSignal identifies influencers

OuterSignal evaluates every customer against its Signal Criteria. The default influencer criteria flags any customer with 10K+ personal followers on any platform — Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and others.

Every customer who meets this threshold appears with a ⭐ in your Signal Feed automatically. No setup required.

Custom influencer thresholds The right threshold depends on your brand and niche. A brand in a tight vertical might care deeply about a 5K micro-influencer with a highly engaged niche audience. A mass-market brand might only want to act on 100K+.

You can request custom Signal Criteria tailored to your brand — just reach out to your CSM or email support@outersignal.com. Common customizations include:

  • A lower or higher follower threshold

  • A higher threshold for brands focused only on macro influencers

  • Stacking influencer reach with other criteria — e.g. 10K+ followers AND repeat customer

Finding your influencer customers

Toggle on the Signal filter In your Signal Feed, toggle on the ⭐ SIGNAL button to instantly filter to all customers matching any Signal Criteria — including influencers.

Filter by influencer criteria specifically Use the filter panel to select the influencer Signal Criteria specifically, isolating influencer customers from other signal types.

Filter by follower count on a specific platform Want to find all your TikTok creators above a certain threshold, or everyone with 50K+ Instagram followers specifically? You can filter by follower count on any individual platform — Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and more — giving you precise control over which type of influencer you're looking for rather than casting a broad net across all platforms.

Combine filters for more precision Stack influencer filters with other attributes — location, persona, LTV, order count — to get even more targeted. For example: TikTok followers over 50K AND LTV over $200

Save it as a segment Save any filtered view as a segment for an always-updated list of influencer customers you can return to anytime and use as the basis for Playbooks.

What to do once you've found them

How you respond depends on their reach. Think in two tiers:

Tier 1: Macro influencers (100K+) Personal outreach is almost always worth it at this level. Set up a Slack alert Playbook so your team gets a real-time notification the moment a macro influencer places an order — then reach out personally, send a thoughtful gift, and include a handwritten note. The Magic Mind approach is the playbook: recognize the customer, make them feel seen, let them decide what to do next. Don't lead with an ask.

Tier 2: Micro influencers (10K–100K) Micro influencers are where most brands have the most untapped opportunity — smaller audiences but often more engaged, and far more of them in your customer base. At this tier, automation does the heavy lifting:

  • Klaviyo tag Playbook → automated ambassador or affiliate invite flow acknowledging they're already a customer

  • Shopify tag Playbook → special packaging or gift included in every order automatically

Building your influencer program over time

The brands getting the most out of influencer discovery aren't just reacting to individual signals — they're building a system:

  1. Signal Feed segment — always-updated list of influencer customers

  2. Slack alert Playbook — real-time notification for macro influencers

  3. Klaviyo tag Playbook — automated ambassador flow for micro influencers

  4. Shopify Note Playbook — handwritten note or gift flagged on every influencer order

  5. Regular check-in — review your influencer segment for new entries worth personal outreach

Once the system is set up, influencer discovery becomes continuous and automatic rather than something you remember to check occasionally.
