Encountering an error while importing geospatial files may require some troubleshooting. The article that follows highlights several common errors users may encounter.
1. Importing the incorrect file format
Users who upload a vector file to a polygon layer type (e.g. buildings, ponds, headlands) or a polygon file to a line layer type (e.g. roads, piping, etc.) may encounter an error.
If this occurs, you can convert the layer into the correct file format using QGIS, an open-source GIS software (free download here).
Import your file to QGIS
Open the processing toolbox via “Processing” in the main toolbar → “Toolbox.”
With your layer selected, search for “lines to polygons” or “polygons to lines” in the processing toolbox.
Convert the file.
Export your converted file in KML format for upload to Overyield.
2. Importing multigeometry files
Attempting to import multi geometry files — i.e. files with multiple polygon or vector units combined into a single feature — will also result in an error.
Users can split apart multigeometry files by opening the file in Google Earth, right clicking the feature, then clicking “split apart multigeometry.” Export the split file as a KML then upload to Overyield.
