Start by unpacking your Oculus kit. To use the OMS VR platform you will need the following items:

  • 1 x Oculus Rift Headset

  • 1 x Oculus Sensor

  • 1 x Oculus remote

Connecting your Rift to your computer

You will need to make sure your headset and sensor are correctly plugged into your computer.

Place the Sensor on the right hand side of your computer and connect it via the USB cable to the machine.

Connect your Headset to the HDMI port on your computer (usually found at the back) and a USB port

Configure your Rift

Open the Oculus application on your computer desktop

If your equipment is properly connected, you will see a set of green ticks. When these appear, click Next. If your computer is not detecting your headset or sensor try unplugging and plugging it back in again until the green ticks appear.

You will now be prompted to set up your controllers. We're going to skip through this for now and connect our remote once the Rift set up is complete. Make sure that neither controller is selected and select Skip.

You now need to set up your Sensor by ensuring the glossy side is facing towards you and that it is tilted slightly upwards. When ready, click Next.

Now set your height in VR. Input your height and click next. You can switch between Metric and Imperial units by sliding the toggle indicated in the image below:

Follow the video instructions on screen to place your Sensor. When ready click Next.

Follow the video on screen to complete your Sensor Tracking. When ready click Next.

If you get the following Sensor Tracking error message, click Skip. This will appear due to an Oculus error will not affect your use of VR going forward.

You will now be taken through some instructions on personalising your Rift. Read through these at your own pace.

Watch the Safety video on screen.

*Note: the sound may come out of your Headset whilst it's connected to your computer. You do not need to put the headset on at this stage.*

Next, carefully read through and Acknowledge the Health and Safety declaration.

You will now see a message that prompts you to connect an Oculus controller. Skip this and follow the next set of instructions to pair your Remote.

Find the Devices menu on the side bar on the left

Select Devices

Check that your remote is not already listed under the Oculus Rift and Touch menu

Select "Remote" (if your remote does not appear, select "Pair Device")

Following the instructions on screen, hold down the Oculus and Select buttons on your remote

A message will appear on screen to confirm that pairing is complete

Once your remote is paired you will be prompted to Set Up your Rift.

Initiate this process. You will be taken through the same steps as above and you can move through these quickly by selecting "Next" to all options.

*Note: as before, if you are experiencing an error message when it comes to Sensor Tracking you can skip through this and still use the VR kit with no adverse effects.*

As you have already watched the Safety video, you will be able to skip through this the second time around.

You'll now be prompted to prepare your space. Follow the video instructions on screen.

You'll be shown the lens slider on the bottom of your headset. This may come in handy if you want to change the distance between the lenses when setting your focus in VR.

You'll now be prompted to continue your set up in VR. Put on your headset and follow the instructions that appear on screen, using your Remote to click through.

Your in-VR set up will include adjusting your focus and setting your view in VR.

Once this is complete, you will enter the Oculus Dream Deck and then a series of virtual worlds to give you a taste of what VR is like. You can skip through any of these experiences by clicking the centre button on your remote.

Enjoy and look out for dinosaurs!
