A quick note about Speaking in Palteca: We do Speaking exercises fundamentally differently than other language apps. Most apps will tell you "great job!" even when your pronunciation isn't quite right — which feels good in the moment, but leaves you with confused looks when you try to speak Spanish in the real world.
Palteca's voice recognition listens closely for authentic Spanish pronunciation and gives you honest feedback, so you can actually become fluent. It's normal for this to feel harder than what you may be used to — that's the point!
The extra effort now pays off when you're speaking confidently with real people later.
That said, if Speaking isn't recognizing what you're saying at all, here are some things to try.
Check your recording technique
How you record makes a big difference. You have two ways to record:
Press and hold the mic button while you speak, then release when you're done (think like talking into a walkie-talkie)
Tap once to start recording, then tap again to stop
If you're using the tap method, watch out for accidentally double-tapping to start. A double-tap tells the app to start and then immediately stop, so your recording ends before you've said anything.
Whichever method you use, try this:
Start the recording
Wait about 1 second, then speak naturally and clearly
After you finish saying the word, wait 1 more second before stopping
That extra second on each end prevents your recording from getting cut off at the start or end, which is one of the most common reasons recognition fails.
Find a quiet environment and speak clearly
Background noise is one of the biggest things that throws off voice recognition — even small amounts can make a difference. Try to find a quiet spot before recording.
It also helps to speak loudly and clearly, more than you might think feels natural.
Play back your recording
After you record, use the "Compare my attempt" button to listen back to yourself. This is one of the most useful things you can do! Listen for:
Is your voice clear and easy to hear?
Is there background noise drowning you out?
Did the recording capture the whole word, without cutting off the beginning or end?
If anything sounds off, try recording again with that in mind.
Listen carefully and mimic the native speaker
Spanish pronunciation can be tricky, especially when sounds are similar but slightly different from English. A few things that help:
Listen to the native speaker several times before recording — really pay attention to the rhythm, stress, and the exact sounds
Try to mimic exactly what you hear, even if it feels unnatural at first
Take it slow. Pronounce the word syllable by syllable until it feels comfortable, then gradually speed up
Avoid the tempting "Show word" option - while it may feel easier, in our experience, it makes recording even harder as your brain is going to want to say the word how we say English words
The goal is to match the native speaker as closely as possible, not to make the word sound familiar in an English way.
Check your internet connection
Voice recognition needs a stable internet connection to process your recording properly. If your connection is weak or unstable, try moving somewhere with better signal or switching to Wi-Fi.
Still stuck? You can always skip
Speaking exercises are there to help you practice — they don't affect your lesson score or progression.
If you've tried everything and you're feeling frustrated, just tap Continue to move on. You can always come back to it later when you're ready.
Perfecting Spanish pronunciation takes time and patience. Don't get discouraged — you're doing great just by sticking with it. ¡Ánimo!
