Each panOpen interactive course has both formative and summative assessments included in them.

Formative Assessments:

Our formative assessments are designed to be "low stakes" and by default are set to have unlimited attempts. The goal here is for students to check their understanding of the material as well as to be able to come back to these activities to help them study. Each formative assessment typically only has one question but they are highly interactive.

Summative Assessments:

Summative Assessments are placed at the end of the chapters. These are "high stakes" assessments meant to be graded. By default these assessments are set to have only two attempts. These summative assessment range in number of questions from 15 to over 60 questions.

Due Dates and Release Dates:

Due Dates:
You can set Due Dates for students so know when an assessment is due. If an assessment has a due date, the correct answers will not show up in the feedback for the students until after the due date has passed.
Each assessment question in panOpen is worth one point by default (this includes formatives).

Release Dates:
For the books you have assigned to your classes, if you don't want certain chapters or sections or even assessments to be accessible until a certain date, that is what you use the panOpen Release Dates feature for. When you set a due date, your students will see the item in the table of contents (it will display as partially transparent), but your students will not be able to navigate to that section until after the release date has passed.

For both due dates and release dates, you are able to assign dates for whole chapters (you can select as many as you want at a time):

Or you can assign them to specific items with chapters:

Note - When you select Due Dates for an assessment, both formative and summative, the correct answers will not be shown to students until after the due date. We encourage all faculty to set due dates on all end of chapter assessments.
