Unfortunately there will be penalties... Here is how to handle them in the PAR Golf app.

Whether you sliced your tee shot out of bounds, chunked a wedge into the lake, or have to take an unplayable to get around that cactus... Entering and editing penalties is easy in PAR Golf.

Unfortunately for any auto shot tracking app... penalties cannot be automatically detected or placed... WHY NOT?!?!? Well, when you hit the ball into the lake, you probably aren't going to swim in there to get it. So PAR Golf has no way to know where that ball found its watery grave. No worries. Let's take care of it in post round editing.

Step 1: When entering your score on your phone or watch, make sure to add penalty strokes before saving.

The app will automatically add that number of penalty shots to your hole after finding the location of other shots using the automatic shot algorithm. Often times the penalties will be in the wrong place and potentially the wrong shot number requiring additional edits.

Scenario 1: Hit tee shot into the water

You can see that the penalty shot was added after the drive, but it was put into the wrong place. The penalty shot should have been in the lake on the left. This is the simplest fix. Simply long press and drag the penalty into the right area.

When you are done, it should look like this:

Scenario 2: Hit an approach shot into the water

By default PAR Golf will add the first penalty as your second shot. In this case, the penalty is actually your 3rd (or 4th or 5th... ) shot. So we are going to have to move the penalty to the correct place AND reorder the shots. Luckily this is easy. Let's revisit the previous example, but assume the tee shot was safe and the second shot went into the water. Again we put the score in the same and get something like this:

We are going to drag the penalty to where it goes, just like in the first scenario. To get this:

So now the shots are in the right place, but they are in the wrong order! This is simple, tap on the shot that is in the wrong order (the penalty) and simply reassign the shot number. For this example, the penalty happened after shot 2, so the penalty should be your 3rd shot. So tap on the penalty shot marker (the shot 2 with the gray icon) to bring up the shot details menu. Tap on Shot Number -> 2 to bring up the menu. Tap on the '2' to bring up the scroll whel

Hit save and the app will reorder and re-calculate the shots to give you something like below:

Now you can see that the shots are in the right order and all penalties are accounted for.

This same process can be used to add penalties for OOB, unplayable lies, or any other penalty situation.
