Tangent Golf has the most advanced Apple Watch app available, including automatic swing detection from full swings to putts. Here are the basics...

The Tangent Golf Watch app requires WatchOS 5.0+ and a Series 3 or greater Apple Watch. The app should automatically install when you download the Phone app if your watch has enough space.

The Tangent Golf watch app is automatically started when you start a round of golf.

The Basics

Below is the main screen of the Tangent Golf watch app.

Navigation

You can navigate between screens by swiping horizontally.

Swing Detection

The watch app will automatically detect swings and log them to the phone app (this feature requires a subscription after the trial period).

Tangent detects most golf swings including practice swings. However, built in logic will only count one swing from each location unless you override it by confirming multiple swings from your wrist.

Take as many practice swings as you need. Tangent's caddie logic will also automatically predict the club that was used for easy hands free club tracking. If it gets it right, no action needed. The swing is automatically recorded.

Add Details

If you want to modify any of the information including lie, club, strike location, or mental scorecard... all can be done with a push of a button. If the data looks correct, just move on to your next shot. Its that simple.

Score Entry

Hit the '+' button from the main screen to bring up score entry.

You'll enter 3 key components.

  • Score

  • Number of putts and from what starting distance

  • Number of penalties if any

Why do we need this information? Because putts are hard to detect and not everyone putts out the short ones. So the difference between a 4 and a 5 might be that 6 inch tap in that you scooped up.

We ask for your putt distance because GPS is only accurate to 3-4 yards and the difference between a 3 foot putt and a 10 foot putt is pretty massive statistically. One of those you are going to make 90% of the time, and the other is more like 30%. With simple putt (enabled by default) you'll enter putts just as:

  • Short - A putt you feel you SHOULD make.

  • Medium - a putt that is makeable, but definitely should not three putt.

  • Long - a putt where the goal is clearly to lag.

And then we ask for penalties because well... if your ball goes in a lake you are not going to swim in after it, so you need to tell us you lost that ball.

Notice that the app is already predicting whether you hit the fairway and most of the work should be done. Should mostly just be confirm and move on.

Putt Details

If you're a glutton for data, we got more. Enable Putt Details in your Tangent preferences under tracking and you can get green reading details to discover trends and get personalized drills to improve your putting.

You'll be prompted to enter details for any missed putt after you enter score on a hole. You'll quickly learn if you tend to over or under read the break or if speed / direction are your problem.

Not sure how to determine this? Watch this video and learn how to do the circle putt drill in the app to learn how to diagnose putts.
