Doula Care in the First Trimester

What to expect with doula care in your first trimester.

Updated over 4 months ago

Congrats — you're pregnant! Whether this is your first or your fifth, the first trimester can come with a whole mix of emotions (and symptoms). At Mahmee, you're not alone. Our doulas are here to support you with education, comfort tools, and a listening ear right from the start.

We know that every pregnancy is unique, so our care is designed to meet you wherever you are. 💛

What is Doula Support Like in the First Trimester?

In your first trimester (weeks 1–12), your Mahmee doula will guide you through two types of appointments:

  • Education-Focused Appointment: Education-Focused Appointment: Learn what’s happening in your body, how to manage common early symptoms, and what to expect in the weeks ahead. This appointment is typically held virtually or in-person for your convenience.

  • Skills-Focused Appointment: Get hands-on strategies and comfort techniques you can start using right away. This appointment is offered in person only so your doula can demonstrate and guide you through these skills directly.

Mahmee’s hybrid care model ensures that you receive the right kind of support—educational and physical—at the right time in your pregnancy.

Topics We Cover

During your education appointment, we’ll talk through:

  • What’s normal in early pregnancy — physically and emotionally

  • How your body is changing (muscles, posture, hormones, and more)

  • Choosing a healthcare provider and where you want to give birth

  • Strategies to help with sleep, bowel changes, nausea, and fatigue

  • What’s coming next as your pregnancy progresses

Skills You'll Practice

In your skills-focused session, we might work on:

  • Guided movements and stretches for early pregnancy relief

  • How to use a back roller or heat/cool packs safely

  • Gentle massage techniques for stress and muscle relief

  • How to care for your skin with pregnancy-safe oils or creams

  • Coping strategies for nausea and emotional shifts

If you're in person, your doula will show you exactly how to use these tools — and even let you try them out with their guidance!
