Doula Care in the Fourth Trimester

What to expect with doula care after baby is born

Updated over 5 months ago

You did it — baby’s here! 🎉 As you settle into life with your new little one, your body and emotions are adjusting too. This time after birth is called the fourth trimester (weeks 1–12 postpartum), and it’s just as important as pregnancy when it comes to healing, support, and feeling cared for.

At Mahmee, your doula is still here for you — to listen, guide, and make sure you're not navigating this big transition alone.

What is Doula Support Like in the Fourth Trimester?

During the fourth trimester, you’ll continue working with your Mahmee doula through two types of appointments:

  • Education-Focused Appointments: These virtual or in-person sessions focus on your recovery, emotional changes, feeding guidance, and what to expect as your baby grows and changes in the first few months.

  • Skills-Focused Appointment: In person, your doula will walk you through newborn care techniques, healing tips, and hands-on feeding or soothing strategies. This visit is designed to help you feel more confident as you settle into your new rhythm.

Topics We Cover

In your education appointment, we’ll talk through:

  • Physical recovery, perineal care, and emotional adjustment

  • Sleep patterns (yours and baby’s!) and what’s normal

  • Infant feeding basics: nursing, pumping, bottle feeding

  • Soothing techniques and daily care routines

  • Communication with your partner and redefining roles

  • Preparing for your postpartum checkups and what comes next

Skills You'll Practice

Your doula may walk you through:

  • Peri-bottle use and padsicle prep for healing

  • Swaddling and safe baby sleep tips

  • Sponge baths and diapering care

  • Breastfeeding or bottle-feeding positions

  • Using sound machines, baby carriers, and more

What’s Included – Fourth Trimester

You’ll also get access to helpful resources like:

  • Postpartum healing guides and feeding logs

  • Infant development and soothing tips

  • Baby wearing, bathing, and diapering how-tos

  • A preview of what’s coming in the next few weeks and months
