Signing up

How do I sign up for Pawprint?

For the best experience we suggest you download the Pawprint app (available on Android and iOS). There is also a web app version available at app.pawprint.eco. Enter your email address and create a password, then hit ‘Create account’. Simples.

If the organisation you work for has sent you a link then please download this app first and then click on the link to join your organisation’s group.

Will I be charged for using Pawprint?

We charge organisations to use Pawprint which entitles them to additional premium features and reporting. If you’d like your organisation to sign up then please let them and us know. The Pawprint consumer version is free of charge.

Your Pawprint score

What is my Pawprint score?

Your Pawprint score is an estimate of the CO2e you are generating annually, based on your survey answers. As you complete actions and challenges, and create new habits, you’ll be able to track the reduction in your Pawprint score.

How is my Pawprint calculated?

Everyone starts with an average carbon footprint of 13.1 tonnes CO2e (provided by our scientific advisor, Prof. Mike Berners-Lee). As you answer the survey questions your score deviates across each section (home, diet, travel, spending & other) and your annual Pawprint score is created.

How can I update or change my survey answers?

Navigate back to the page with your Pawprint score on it, scroll down to the bottom of the screen and click on the link ‘Improve my Pawprint accuracy’. This will allow you to change your survey answers. We’ll be adding additional ‘deep dive’ questions here soon.

Why should I be aware of my Pawprint?

We should all be aware of our Pawprint score as it indicates our personal contribution to climate change and gives us a reference point from which we can work to lower our impact

Can one person really make a difference to climate change?

By yourself? No. But as part of a movement? Hell yes. If we all make small changes the collective impact will be immense.

What is the ideal Pawprint? (What should I be aiming for?)

Your Pawprint depends on so many different things - where you live, where your friends and family are, the property you live in, the job you have, etc. etc. Some things are completely within your power to change, others require commitment from more than just you. An ideal Pawprint combines the small changes you are able to make yourself, with time and energy spent on pushing for change outside of your control.

Does my Pawprint show only my own impact, or the impact of my whole household?

It is designed to show only your impact. When you answer questions for your whole household, we divide it by the number of people in your household to give us your personal score.

Why is my Pawprint split into sections (toes)? What does each section cover?

Our toes—diet, home, travel, and spending & other—help you understand where your big hitters are and where to place your focus.

Diet covers what you eat, home covers energy and water use, travel covers how you get around and spending & other covers everything else, like clothes, weekends away, and your proportion of the footprint of national services like the NHS.

Using Pawprint

How do I reduce my Pawprint?

Up to you! Take a browse through our eco-actions to find something that works for you. Start small and then develop these actions into new, carbon reducing habits.

When I carry out an action or habit, is my Pawprint reduced automatically?

Yes. If you record an action or habit your Pawprint is automatically reduced. A one-off action will reduce your Pawprint by a small amount, but every little counts! The bigger reductions come when you turn those actions into longer term habits.

Why can’t I create habits straight away?

Creating habits is hard, and doesn’t happen overnight. We ask you to complete one- off actions a number of times to build up to your new eco-habit. Only then will you unlock the option to make this an ongoing habit. Behavioural science tells us this is the most effective approach - start small and build from there.

Does reducing my Pawprint really make a difference?

Yes absolutely!!! Pawprint is here to encourage you to make small changes daily and each of these changes will add up to have a big impact on your carbon footprint. Imagine if you, all of your family and your workmates made these changes every day - that’s one big snowball effect right there!

Why can’t I offset my Pawprint through the app?

While planting trees to suck carbon out of the air is important, nothing will ever beat not emitting carbon in the first place. By making small, carbon-reducing changes to your daily life, you’re making a guaranteed difference to the fight against climate change, in real time. No need to wait around for trees to grow!

Joining your organisation’s group

How do I join my organisation’s group?

We suggest a two step process to join your organisation’s group:

1) Download the Pawprint app (available for both

Android and iOS) and create an account

2) Click the link your organisation sends you to join the

group (if you don’t download the app first then

clicking the link will allow you to join the group via our

web app version of Pawprint).

Why do I need to join my organisation’s group?

Joining the group allows you to access additional features and functionality - Sprints, ‘at work’ survey’, teams and leaderboards. It also allows your organisation to tally up the total CO2e reduction from everyone in the group.

Will my organisation be able to see my Pawprint data?

No. They will only be able to see rolled up aggregated data of all employees. They do not have access to your individual survey answers.

Can I hide myself from the leaderboards?

Yes. We will soon be launching individual leaderboards showing the CO2e reduction which individuals have achieved. Users can choose to hide or show their name and reduction from the leaderboard. Although we would encourage you to participate and have some friendly competition with your colleagues.

Teams and Leaderboards

How do I join my team?

When you navigate to your organisation’s group within the app you’ll be offered a drop down list of teams. Simply choose your team from that list to join it.

How do I leave my team and/or join another team?

When in the group choose ‘team settings’ and then choose your new team from the drop down list. This will remove you from your existing team and move you into your new team.

What data is shown on the leaderboards

The leaderboards show only the rolled up team data. You can look at the total CO2e saved by team or the average CO2e saved by team which allows a fairer comparison when teams have different numbers of members. The average CO2e saved number will be introduced from end November.

Pawprint Sprints

What is a Sprint?

It’s a collection of our eco-actions which we pull together for everyone to focus on for a short period of time (typically 2-6 weeks). Within the Sprint card you can see the CO2e saving you have achieved from doing these actions as well as the total CO2e saved by everyone in your group doing the Sprint actions.

How are the Sprint actions chosen?

We’ll suggest a set of Sprint actions to your organisation based on the time of year and/or topical events. If you have ideas or suggestions for actions you’d like to see included, please tell your Pawprint Champion or contact.

Pawprint’s CO2e data

What is CO2e?

Carbon dioxide equivalent, or CO2e, is the measure of all greenhouse gas emissions rolled into one. Carbon dioxide is the most common greenhouse gas emitted by human activities in terms of the quantity released and the total impact on global warming.

Where does Pawprint get its data from? Is the data reliable?

We have partnered with the carbon footprint expert Professor Mike Berners-Lee. Author of How bad are bananas? The carbon footprint of everything. We also use a number of other reputable sources e.g. The Energy Saving Trust and UK Government.

Can I use Pawprint outside the UK?

Pawprint’s data is optimised for the UK but the app can still be used elsewhere, albeit with less accuracy in some areas. The main difference is the energy calculations in the Home survey - the carbon factor of grids in different countries can vary quite markedly.

Your data

What will Pawprint do with my data?

Your data is held securely, adhering to all GDPR regulations – see our privacy policy.

We will never sell individual user data.

Pawpoints

How do Pawpoints work?

As you interact with Pawprint (logging in, sharing with friends, completing actions and

challenges) you earn Pawpoints. You can ‘spend’ your Pawpoints on one or more of our three selected charities/organisations. This determines how we split a monthly donation across those good causes, and widens the reach of your efforts.

How are the charities/organisations selected for Pawpoints?

We have simply chosen some of our favourite climate friendly organisations, but happy to hear your suggestions too.
