Understanding food and environmental allergies in pets

Updated over 2 weeks ago

Food allergies

Food allergies occur when the immune system reacts negatively to certain proteins in the diet. The most common symptoms: skin itching, digestive issues, excessive licking of the paws or ears.

The most effective approach is a mono-protein diet — a single source of animal protein — which makes it easier to identify and eliminate specific allergens. Hydrolyzed proteins may also be recommended in more severe cases.

Environmental allergies

Environmental allergies are caused by allergens outside the diet: pollen, dust mites, mold. Typical symptoms include sneezing, skin inflammation, and paw licking.

A strengthened immune system — supported by gut health — can help reduce the severity of environmental reactions. This is why diet plays an indirect but real role in this type of allergy.
