Tenant Sign Up
Tenant sign up is the process by which a tenant gains access to PayYourRent (PYR) to view invoices and submit rent payments. Whether a tenant can see invoices or make payments depends on how their account was created, whether it is linked to a specific unit, and whether the tenant’s Move-In date has occurred.
A tenant may be able to log in before Move-In; however, invoices, balances, and payment options will not appear until the Move-In date has occurred, and the unit is available.
When Manager Action Is Required
You should review a tenant’s sign-up status if:
A tenant reports they cannot see invoices or make a payment after the Move-In date has occurred
This most commonly indicates that the account exists but is still an applicant account, not an active tenant account.
If this applies, the account must be activated and linked to a unit.
For step-by-step instructions, see Activating an Applicant Account.
When No Action Is Required
No action is required if:
The tenant has registered successfully, and
The Move-In date has not yet occurred
Future tenants will not see invoices or payment options until:
The existing tenant has been moved out, and
The future tenant’s Move-In date has occurred
Understanding PayYourRent Links
PayYourRent provides multiple property-specific links that support different stages of the leasing and payment process. While several links are accessed from the same location in the Manager Portal, each link serves a different purpose and results in a different account state. It is important to select and share the link that matches the intended action.
Option 1: Application Link
Purpose: Application submission, screening, and application fee collection
Used to submit rental applications through PayYourRent
Supports tenant screening and approval/decline recommendations
Collects application fees
Creates an applicant account
Does not create a tenant account
Does not enable rent payments
Where to find it: Manager Portal → Properties → Edit → Rental Application URL
Option 2: Registration Link (Tenant Signup URL)
Purpose: Allow an approved future tenant to register their PayYourRent account
Used after the applicant has been approved to move in
Allows the future tenant to register for PayYourRent
Creates an active tenant account when:
A specific unit is assigned, and
A Move-In date is set
Invoices and rent payment options become visible only after the Move-In date has occurred
Where to find it: Manager Portal → Properties → Edit → Tenant Signup URL
Option 3: Security Deposit Link
Purpose: Collect a security deposit
Used to collect security deposits
Does not activate a tenant account
Does not link an account to a unit
Does not enable rent payments
Where to find it: Manager Portal → Properties → Edit → Deposit URL
Option 4: Add Tenant (PayYourRent Sends Registration Email)
Purpose: Have PayYourRent initiate tenant registration via email
Used after the applicant has been approved to move in
Manager selects Add Tenant in the Manager Portal
PayYourRent sends the future tenant an email invitation with registration instructions
Tenant appears under Invited Tenants until registration is completed
Once registered, the tenant moves to Current Tenants
Creates an active tenant account when the unit and Move-In date are assigned
Invoices and rent payment options become visible only after the Move-In date has occurred
Where to find it: Manager Portal → Tenants → Add Tenant
Unit Not Visible During Registration
If a future tenant cannot find their unit during registration, this is typically because:
Another tenant is still assigned to the unit
Only one tenant can be assigned to a unit at a time
The existing tenant must be moved out before a new tenant can register for the unit.
This behavior is tied to unit assignment rules and does not indicate an issue with the tenant’s account or the registration link.
For step-by-step instructions, see Moving Out a Tenant.
Important Notes
Applicant accounts can log in but cannot see invoices or submit payments
Activation is a manual step and is commonly missed if not completed at approval
Changing an application status to Accepted does not activate a tenant account
This issue most often surfaces when a tenant attempts to pay first month’s rent
Tenant access to invoices and payments is controlled by tenant registration, unit assignment, and the Move-In date, not by application status alone.
When to Contact Support
Contact Support only if all of the following are true:
The tenant account has been activated and linked to a unit, and
The Move-In date has occurred, and
The existing tenant has been moved out, and
The tenant still cannot see invoices or payment options
