What equipment do I need to get started?

Recommendations on what equipment works best with Peak Strength Training Plans.

Written by Ivan Escott

Every athlete has different training resources. This guide explains what you can achieve with each level of equipment so you can make the most of whatever you have access to.

Tier I: Bodyweight ($0)

You can use Peak Strength with no equipment at all. If no equipment is selected, you'll have access to a bodyweight Training Plan.

If you're traveling and temporarily without equipment, you can also add a bodyweight Bonus workout:

  1. On the Training Dashboard, tap "Add workout."

  2. Select "Bodyweight" under the Bonus Workouts section.

Tier II: Minimal equipment ($0-$200)

With bands and lighter dumbbells, Peak Strength can take your training to the next level. If you don't have access to a gym or heavier equipment, the essentials are bands and dumbbells. Peak Strength will structure your workouts to get the most out of what you have.

Key pieces:

  • Bands

  • Dumbbells

Helpful additions:

  • Jump boxes

  • Medicine balls

  • Jump rope

  • Kettlebells

  • Foam roller

  • Dowel rod

  • Ab wheel

Tier III: Commercial gym ($10-$50/month)

This is the suggested minimum for a sports performance Training Plan. Peak Strength works well with gyms like Planet Fitness, LA Fitness, YMCAs, and local fitness clubs.

One thing to keep in mind: equipment at commercial gyms can be spread around the floor, which may make Supersets and Circuits harder to set up.

Key pieces:

  • Barbell

  • Weight plates

  • Squat rack

  • Bench

  • Machines

  • Dumbbells

  • Cardio equipment

  • Leg press

Tier IV: Home gym ($500+)

A well-equipped home gym works great with Peak Strength. The most important single piece of equipment for a highly varied Training Plan is a barbell.

Key pieces:

  • Barbell

  • Weight plates

  • Adjustable dumbbells

  • Squat rack

  • Cardio equipment

  • Adjustable bench

Tier V: Power gym ($50-$100/month)

Power gyms offer full gym access but may not have space for sprint work, hurdles, jumps, or Olympic lifts. Peak Strength can build a full Training Plan around these constraints.

Key pieces:

  • Barbell

  • Weight plates

  • Squat rack

  • Bench

  • Deadlift platform

  • Machines

  • Dumbbells

  • Cardio equipment

  • Turf

  • Glute ham

  • Reverse hyper

Tier VI: High-performance gym ($100+/month)

Peak Strength is best suited for a high-performance gym with space for Olympic lifts, jumps, and varied cardio. This level unlocks the full range of what Peak Strength's Training Plans can offer.

Key pieces:

  • Platform

  • Barbell

  • Bumper plates

  • Turf

  • Squat rack

  • Weight sled

  • Blocks

  • Hurdles
