Map Tools in Search

In this article, learn how to use map tools, including radius, polygon, freehand, and commute filters, to visually define your listing search area.

When to use Map Tools:

Use map tools when you need to define a specific area or commute time visually on the map. This is ideal for drawing a custom boundary around a neighborhood a client wants to live in, or finding homes within a set commute time from a workplace or school.

Locating Map Tools

Steps:

  1. Navigate to Search

  2. Expand the map using the pin icon

  3. Click into the map tools located in the top left corner of the map

Drawing Boundaries

Circle Shapes (Radius Boundaries)

Create a circular boundary around a specific address, adjustable by miles.

  3. A circle appears around the location

  4. Use the βˆ’ and + buttons in the boundary control bar to adjust the radius (0.25–20 miles), or type a value directly into the miles field

πŸ’‘ Tip: Click the boundary to open the control bar. Use the βœ“ button to Include or the βœ— button to Exclude listings. Use the bin icon to delete it.

Custom Shapes (Polygon Boundaries)

Create custom shapes to match your clients' needs down to the specific street and avenue.

    1. Note: You need at least 3 points

  4. Close the shape by clicking back on the first point you placed

πŸ’‘ Tip: Click the boundary to open the control bar. Use the βœ“ button to Include or the βœ— button to Exclude listings. Use the bin icon to delete it.

  4. Drag freely on the map to draw your boundary

  5. Release the mouse button to complete the shape

    1. Note: The boundary will automatically close if you draw back near your starting point

Commute Filter

Find listings reachable within a set commute time from a specific location, such as an office or school.

Steps:

  1. Click the search icon in the top-left map toolbar and type a US address

    1. Or, while the search bar is open, click anywhere on the map to drop a pin

  2. Hover over the search result and click the Commute icon

Tips

  • You can use multiple map tools together to narrow down your exact search area.

  • Switch between map styles for better visibility: Roadmap, Satellite, and Terrain.

  • Use the + and βˆ’ icons to zoom in and out on the map.

  • If you're sharing your location, click the pin icon to re-center the map to your current location.

  • The address search bar (top-left of the map) supports US addresses only, including zip codes, street addresses, neighborhoods, and city names.

  • Use the Clear all button in the top-left map toolbar to remove all boundaries at once. To remove a single boundary, click it and use the bin icon in the boundary control bar.

  • If you have 2 or more boundaries drawn, a toggle appears below the toolbar: Any boundary (listing matches at least one) or Overlaps only (listing must fall within all).

  • Click any boundary to open the boundary control bar β€” use the βœ“ (checkmark) to Include, βœ— (X-circle) to Exclude, or the bin icon to delete.
