Create a tooltip

This step-by-step guide shows you how to build reusable text snippets that provide helpful guidance throughout your performance review process.

Creating and using tooltips in Performance Leader

Tooltips are a simple yet powerful way to support your team throughout the performance review process. These short, reusable text snippets can be attached to most inputs within reviews, providing optional guidance exactly when it's needed.

In this guide, we'll walk you through creating tooltips and show you how to use them effectively in your reviews. By the end, you'll be confident in building a library of helpful prompts that make reviews clearer and more consistent across your firm.

What are tooltips?

Tooltips are short pieces of guidance that appear next to form fields, questions, and inputs throughout the Reviews module. They're perfect for providing examples, clarifications, or helpful reminders without cluttering your review forms. Think of them as optional support that's there when users need it, but never in the way.

For instance, you might create a tooltip with examples of effective development suggestions, or guidance on writing SMART objectives. Once created, these tooltips can be reused across multiple reviews and attached to any relevant input field.

Accessing the tooltips feature

Tooltips are only available within the Reviews module, as they're designed specifically to support your review processes.

  1. Navigate to the Reviews module from your main menu.

  2. At the top of the Reviews module, locate and click on Rating Scales and Tooltips.

  3. Select Tooltips to open the tooltip builder.

Creating a new tooltip

The tooltip builder makes it quick and straightforward to create new guidance snippets.

  1. In the tooltip builder, click Add New Tooltip.

  2. Enter a clear, descriptive title for your tooltip (e.g., "Effective Objectives Guidance" or "Development Suggestions Examples").

  3. Add your content in the text field. You can type directly or paste prepared content from another document.

  4. Review your tooltip to ensure the guidance is clear and helpful.

  5. Click Save to add the tooltip to your library.

Your tooltip is now ready to use and will appear in your list of available tooltips.

Using tooltips in your reviews

Once you've created tooltips, they become available throughout your review building process. You can attach them to objectives, instructions, questions, or any other input field where additional context might be helpful.

  1. When building or editing a review, navigate to the input field where you'd like to add guidance.

  2. Select the input and look for the tooltip option on the right panel.

  3. Select the appropriate tooltip from the dropdown.

  4. The tooltip will now appear next to that input, providing optional support to users completing the review.

Users will see a small indicator next to the field and can click or hover to view the guidance when they need it.

Best practices for tooltips

  • Keep them concise: Tooltips work best when they're brief and to the point. Aim for 2-3 sentences or a short list of examples.

  • Use clear titles: Make it easy to find the right tooltip by giving each one a descriptive, searchable title.

  • Focus on examples: Show users what good looks like rather than just telling them what to do.

  • Review regularly: Update your tooltips periodically to ensure they remain relevant and aligned with your firm's evolving practices.

  • Build a library: Create tooltips for common scenarios and reuse them across multiple reviews to maintain consistency.

Important: Updating a tooltip updates it everywhere it is used. This is helpful when correcting errors, but just be careful your edits won't negatively impact other reviews.
