In this guide, you'll learn how to create the second step of a review process in Performance Leader, where reviewers assess employee self-reflections and provide their feedback. We'll walk you through duplicating your first step to save time, configuring the reviewer's form, bringing through employee inputs from the previous step, and adding rating scales and comment sections for manager feedback.
Understanding the reviewer step
The second step of your review allows the reviewer (typically a manager) to see the employee's self-reflection responses and anything else that was included in the first step. This could include some or all of the below
financial data
self-reflection comments
objectives
self-ratings
attachments
contributor feedback
Inputs from the previous step can be presented as read-only outputs or allow them to be editable. The reviewer can reference read-only outputs whilst making their evaluation.
Accessing the review builder
To begin building your second step:
Navigate to the review builder page for your review
Scroll down to see the existing step configuration
Click Configure steps to enter the review builder interface
You'll see headings for each step at the top of the builder
Duplicating the first step
Rather than building the second step from scratch, you can duplicate the first step and modify it for the reviewer:
In the review builder, locate step one (the employee self-reflection step)
Duplicate the step - the system will create a copy automatically
Rename the duplicated step to reflect its purpose (e.g., "Manager assessment")
Delete any pages within the step that aren't needed for the reviewer
Reassign the step to the manager or primary reviewer
Save your changes
This approach can save considerable time if step one and step two share similar structures.
Updating language and instructions
Once you've duplicated the step, update the content to suit the reviewer's perspective:
Click into each page within the reviewer step
Update the instructions and headings to reflect that this is for the manager to complete
Review any constraints or settings (e.g., feedback date ranges) to ensure they're still appropriate
Bringing through employee inputs
The key function of the reviewer step is displaying what the employee submitted in step one:
In the review builder, look for the Review field section in the left elements panel
You'll see a list of all inputs from previous steps, organised by form
Drag the relevant employee inputs (e.g., "What I've done well", "What can be done better") into your reviewer form
Position these inputs where you want the reviewer to see them
The system will display these as read-only outputs, showing what the employee entered
You can optionally make these editable if you want the reviewer to modify them
This ensures the reviewer has full visibility of the employee's self-reflection whilst completing their assessment.
Creating the reviewer inputs
Now add opportunities for the reviewer can provide their own feedback. There are a number of ways you can do this. The two most common are
creating reviewer inputs just under each reviewee input - the reviewer reads the comment and enters theirs just under
creating a section for the reviewer input - the rest of the form is read only and shows the reviewer what the reviewee has written
In this example, we're taking the second approach - creating a section at the end of the second page for reviewer inputs with a Rating and a Text Comment. To do so,
Add a new section to the form (e.g., "Overall comments")
From the elements panel, drag in a Rating component
Choose whether to create a bespoke rating scale or use an existing rating scale you've configured previously
Add a Text area component for overall comments
Update the labels and descriptions for each input field
Save the page
Finalising the confirm and submit section
The final page of any step is the "Confirm and Submit" page. This allows users to confirm and submit the review, save and exit or download a PDF (these options are configurable through the additional settings on the review builder right-side panel).
To update the final page of your reviewer step:
Navigate to the confirm and submit page
Update the instructions to guide the reviewer through final submission
Save the page
Testing your reviewer step
Before rolling out your review, test the complete flow:
Preview the form from the reviewer's perspective
Verify that employee inputs from step one appear correctly
Check that all manager input fields function as expected
Test the rating scale and comment sections
Confirm that the language and instructions are clear throughout
Submit a test review to ensure the workflow progresses correctly
Testing ensures your reviewers will have a smooth, intuitive experience when completing their assessments.
