How to choose the right flange size

How to determine the appropriate size for effective pumping

Updated over 6 months ago

Choosing the right flange size is important for both comfort and milk production.

In general, the best flange size for you is the one that fits your nipple best (before pumping), without the nipple touching the sides (there should be 1 or 2 mm distance from the nipple tunnel).

When ordering from our online store, on the product page, you can choose between sizes 15, 18, 21, 24, and 27. To the right of the available sizes, you'll find our size guide.

HOW TO MEASURE YOUR NIPPLE

Stimulate your nipple until it pops out and measure the diameter of your nipple in millimeters, from base to base. You can measure it with any kind of ruler.

For flat nipples, it's crucial to gently stimulate the nipple to make it as erect as possible before measuring. This can be done by lightly massaging or using a warm cloth.

If you measured less than 12 mm → choose SIZE 15

If you measured from 12 to 14 mm → choose SIZE 18

If you measured from 15 to 17 mm →choose SIZE 21

If you measured 18 to 20 mm → choose SIZE 24

If you measured from 21 to 25 mm → choose SIZE 27

Finding the right flange size is both a science and an art: if your nipples are very elastic, it may be advantageous to reduce the nipple size, whereas some people find themselves in between sizes and prefer a size larger than the one they've measured. You may need to experiment with different flange sizes to see what works best for you. It's also possible to have two different nipple sizes.

If you think you're between sizes, don't stress: as the Perifit breast pump flange is made of flexible silicone, it's more likely to be able to adapt to your nipple size. We suggest starting with the size that fits closest to your nipple without touching it.

Our flanges are also sold individually on our website right here.
