When downloading images from your gallery, it's important to consider both the resolution and file size of your photos. In this article, we'll explore understanding image resolution and its impact on file size.
Image Resolution and Dimension
It’s important to know what image resolution means vs dimension and how the two affect each other.
Dimension is the total number of pixels along the length and width of an image.
Resolution is the number of pixels per inch of an image when printed, known as PPI (pixels per inch) or DPI (dots per inch).
If you change the resolution of an image (PPI/DPI), the dimensions (width and height) will also change in order to maintain the same amount of image data.
Image Optimization
Your photographer may have chosen to use an image optimizer, which helps in boosting upload and download speeds by repackaging the image file into a more compact size. This process functions by simply packaging the file in a better way and removing unneeded data to save space. It does not change your image resolution (dpi/ppi) or image dimensions (pixel count). The optimizer is compressing each photo with a number of different JPG parameters and compares the result to the original image, then selects the best compression that has no noticeable change in the image. The optimized files are still perfect for printing and are the same resolution and pixel dimensions as when your photographer uploaded them.
