Photoroom has a wide range of editing features that you can use to customize your designs. We classify them into two main groups:

  • Features and tools
These are the regular editing features that include the basics, such as adding shapes and text, changing colors, moving layers in front or behind, etc.

  • AI features and tools
These are the more advanced editing features that use artificial intelligence to generate or enhance your designs.

Here, we provide a quick overview of some of the main non-AI editing features. To learn more about the AI features, see AI features and tools.

Note: Access to the features, and the number of images you can create with them, is limited based on your subscription plan. You can learn about our subscription plans on the Photoroom website.

Background removal and "Edit Cutout"

One of the first things you'll likely do with Photoroom is to upload a photo so that Photoroom can remove its background. This will leave the main subject of the photo on its own layer in a Photoroom design.

Side-by-side images. The left image shows a photo of a chair in an office. The right image shows the same chair but the background has been removed from the photo.

If Photoroom has removed too much or too little of your background, use the Edit Cutout feature to edit it. Edit Cutout lets you restore some of the original background or remove more of it.

Templates for pre-built design layers

When you have a design that has its background removed, you need to choose a template. The template provides a background layer and can also include other layers to make your design pop!

Photoroom templates on iPhone. There are many categories of template, including trending, marble and wood, professional product imagery, profile pics, minimal shop and more.

Photoroom has many pre-built templates available, including:

  • Simple templates for white, black, and transparent backgrounds

  • An original background template for keeping the background of your imported photo

  • Specially designed templates for popular themes and trends, such as special events

If you prefer, you can create your own custom template.

Layers for arranging and editing parts of a design

Each design is made up of layers. There is a background layer and then other layers are placed on top, such as the layer for the main subject of your design. You can move layers up and down in the order, to create overlapping effects.

Side by side images. The left image shows a multi-layered design. The right image shows the layers list for the design, where the top layer is the foreground layer and each lower layer is placed behind.

Also, every layer has its own settings that you can use to make changes. For example, a text layer has settings for changing the font and the color of the text.

A text layer is selected, revealing its settings.

Insert shapes, images, and text

Once you have the main visuals of a design, you can insert shapes, images, and text as additional layers. Each layer has its own settings for changing the color, style, and applying different effects.

Brand kit

With Brand Kit, you can create a collection of your brand's visual elements, including colors, fonts, logos and graphics. Your team can then use them in their designs. It's an easy way to ensure brand consistency.

Backgrounds

Each design has a background layer and you can use the Backgrounds settings to change it. There are options for changing the color, removing the background, and replacing the background with a photo or a pre-made background from the Photoroom library.

Each background layer also has its own settings, where you can make further changes.

Side-by-side images. The left image shows a perfume bottle with a black and silver pattern background. The right image shows the same bottle, but with a gradient background that fades from blue to pink.

Note: There are AI features available too, including Make realistic and AI Backgrounds.

To find out more, see the Backgrounds articles.

Resizing your design

Use Resize to change the size of the design so that it suits your requirements. You can set a custom size, choose a standard size and orientation, or choose from a wide range of preset sizes that are designed for social media and marketplace platforms.

Three images side-by-side. Image 1 shows the standard resize options, image 2 shows the social media resize options, and image 3 shows the marketplace options.

To learn about resizing, see the Sizing and spacing articles.

Exporting and sharing a design

When you have finished editing a design, you can save it in Photoroom by exiting the editor. You can also download your design as an image file, save the design as an image file on your device, and share your design with other people.

The export and share page. It shows a preview of the design and has options for saving to the device and sharing the image file or a link to the image.

To learn more about the export and sharing options, see the Exporting and sharing articles.
