At each compartment in the pillbox there is a sensor that through infrared light (IR) senses if something is in the compartment or not.

When something is put into or removed from the compartment the pillbox communicates this directly to your phone via Bluetooth if there is a connection, or eventually via the 3G net if there is not a connection. If you have any problems with an incorrect notification this can be due to the app not being connected to the pillbox, in this article it is explained how you solve this problem.

The sensors can be sensitive to dust and other dirt in the compartments of the pillbox, which results in them not being able to see if there is anything in the compartments or not.

That is why the pillbox works best when you periodically clean it.
