How to Customize Fields in Pipedrive to Better Track and Display Information

Pipedrive offers extensive options for customizing fields to help you track and display information in a way that suits your business needs. This guide explains how to create and edit custom fields, manage default fields, and customize field visibility across different views.

Overview of Field Customization

Field customization in Pipedrive allows you to:

  • Create custom fields to track specific information, such as lead sources or deal details.

  • Manage default fields, including hiding or adjusting their visibility.

  • Customize how fields appear in different views, such as the Deal Summary sidebar or detailed deal view.

Creating and Editing Custom Fields

To create or edit custom fields for deals, leads, or other entities:

  1. Open the Account menu (top-right corner) and navigate to Personal Preferences > Data Fields.

  2. Select the entity where you want to add the field (e.g., Deal, Person, Organization, Product, or Project).

  3. Click + Custom Field to add a new field. Choose the field type, name it, and save.

  4. To rename or edit an existing custom field, click the ... next to the field name, select Edit, make your changes, and save.

Note: The ability to make custom fields mandatory depends on your subscription plan. Some plans do not allow this feature.

Managing Default Fields

Source Channel Fields

Default fields like "Source channel" and "Source channel ID" cannot be deleted. However, you can manage their visibility:

  • Add Deal/Lead View: Use the "Lead/Deal Add View" setting to toggle visibility when creating a new deal or lead.

  • Detailed Deal View: To hide the "Source" section entirely (including Source channel fields), customize the sidebar: - Open a deal or lead. - Click the three-dot menu at the top of the sidebar. - Select Manage Sidebar and remove or hide the "Source" section.

Note: Hiding fields only removes them from view; they still exist in the backend.

Customizing Field Visibility

Deal Summary Sidebar

To make custom deal fields visible in the Deal Summary sidebar:

  1. Place the custom fields into a section included in the sidebar layout.

  2. Reorder sections via the sidebar’s settings.

Important: Field names/titles are not persistently shown in the Summary view to save space. They appear only on hover. For persistent visibility, use the Details view.

Limitations on Field Types

Certain field types, such as long text, multiple option, and date range fields, cannot be displayed on deal cards. If a custom field does not appear as an option to add, it may be due to its type or account-specific features. Recent updates to Pipedrive have expanded customization options, but these updates are being rolled out gradually.

Tracking Lead Sources with Custom Fields

If the default "Source" field cannot be edited, you can create a custom field to track lead sources:

  1. Go to Company Settings and navigate to Data Fields.

  2. Add a custom field and populate it with your preferred source information when adding a new deal or lead.

This approach allows you to track sources in a way tailored to your requirements.

Limitations and Plan-Specific Features

  • Some customization options, such as making fields mandatory, depend on your subscription plan.

  • Updates to field customization features are rolled out gradually, so availability may vary.

By following these steps, you can effectively customize fields in Pipedrive to better track and display the information most relevant to your business.
